How Liberals Argue

by Arthur Weinreb

November 25, 2002

A lot of times liberals, both small "l" and large, engage in arguments that have little validity and even they recognize the weaknesses in their points of view. But a common trait amongst those on the left is the feeling that only they have the right answers because they are the only ones who "care". As a result, they never let the truth get in the way of a good argument and they employ various methods in their attempt to defend what is sometimes indefensible.

A common method employed by liberals is to simply change the argument and argue something else. An example of this technique can be seen when the federal Liberal government attempts to defend their financing of the Canadian military. Every person, group and think tank who has studied the issue has concluded that our armed forces are greatly under funded. If Sammy bin Laden hasn’t commented on the sad state of affairs of our military, it’s only because no one can find him to ask him. Everyone over the age of 5 knows that we neglect our soldiers and even government members will never say that we spend enough. But that doesn’t stop them from arguing against critics of defense spending. When Deputy Prime Minister John Manley was questioned about the lack of funding, he changed the argument around and attacked the questioner for putting down the men and women who serve in the military which was not the issue. By attacking the questioner and painting him as unpatriotic and unsympathetic to those who put their lives on the line, Manley tried to portray himself as "caring" and "compassionate".

Another tactic is to not argue it all, but to try and win by yelling and screaming. In the budget that was just released for the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), the Toronto trustees and their special interest group supporters employed this method. When forensic accountant Al Rosen reported that the absentee rate for school janitors (oops, custodial engineers) was between 24 and 36%, the head CUPE Local 4400, John Weatherup simply lashed out at Rosen saying that his report was full of "lies and distortions". He then boo-hooed about the level of the board’s funding. By so doing he created enough of a ruckus to avoid what he undoubtedly couldn’t counter--that part of the school board’s problem was his over paid and under worked members. He of course, never did produce numbers that contradicted Rosen’s.

Those on the left who are too intellectually challenged to do any of the above, simply revert to the elementary school playground and resort to name-calling. During the last federal election campaign, Revenue Minister Elinor Caplan was facing a problem in her heavily Liberal and heavily Jewish riding north of Toronto. Caplan had to get around the fact that the pro-Israel Canadian Alliance looked better to some voters than the government, whose foreign policy is run by that great moral equivalancer himself, Bill Graham, who takes his marching orders from the anti-Israel United Nations. Caplan simply said that those who support the Alliance are racists, bigots and holocaust deniers. Lefties like Caplan, who resort to name calling are, like Caplan, arrogant mental midgets (bet no one ever called Caplan a midget before). It’s not that they don’t agree with conservatives--they lack the ability to view any views other than their own as valid.

In this age of cultural Marxism and political correctness, name calling is also resorted to by liberals as a way to keep some of their policies from being opposed. For example, a country’s immigration policy is just that--a policy. Much like other policies like taxation and social spending, there are times when it should be increased and times when it should be decreased. But members of the Natural Governing Party, who see every immigrant to Canada as a potential Liberal voter, don’t want immigration to ever decrease. So they tell anyone who dares suggest decreases in the level of immigration, that they are racists. And in today’s society, it works.

The next time you see a left winger argue, watch to see if they are really opposing the position that the other party is putting forward.
