Politically Incorrect

Stop the World! It's Politically Incorrect

by Arthur Weinreb

August 5, 2002

It was bound to happen. Someone had to complain. This is Canada after all. If no one complained we would have lost one of our truly Canadian values.

The "someone" in this case is Krishna Sukul, director of the Canadian Satsangh Organization, a Hindu organization. When hundreds of thousands of young Catholics descended upon Toronto for World Youth Day, Mr. Sukul, while stressing that he did not oppose the event (to which Catholics and the Church must be extremely grateful), objected to the name "World Youth Day. In Sukul’s view it should have been called "World Catholic Youth Day" to indicate that it was a Catholic gathering and not a multicultural one. One can speculate upon whether this criticism would have been made if it had been a Caribbean or a Muslim endeavour instead of a Christian one, but I digress.

If anyone is to blame for this affront to our Canadian multiculturally obsessed society, it is Pope John Paul II. After all, he came up with the idea. He put on the show. You would think that the Pope, who grew up in Poland facing communism and Nazism would understand the fear and horror that can be caused by calling something "World Youth Day". On the other hand, the 82-year-old pontiff can perhaps be forgiven since he, unlike Krishna Sukul, seems to have a life.

It is obvious that we as a country have to do something to end this discrimination. We need a law to ban the use of the word "world" unless it applies to everyone in the world, regardless of country, race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, age, height, weight… Jean Chrétien would probably be in favour of it. After all he’s the guy who, when not running to Toronto to kiss the Pope’s ring, is bragging about how he kept religion and God out of the memorial service for the victims of September 11.

If the U.S. can have a new Homeland Security Department then Canada can have a new Department of Political Correctness. We in Canada place much more importance on not insulting the sensibilities of people like Mr. Sukul than we do on security. PoCoCan (Political Correctness Canada) will need a Cabinet minister to head it and Hedy Fry would be the perfect candidate. And being from B.C. Fry could help the PM in his War on Martinism.

There will be a lot of banning to do. For example, the "World Series" will have to go. World indeed - the teams are all American except for the Jays and the Expos. And the Expos, much like David Frum, are bound to end up in Washington. Until every country gets a chance to play, the fall classic will have to be referred to as the American +Toronto+Montreal series. The boys of summer (or should that be the boys, girls and transgendered of summer) won’t be pleased but, throw in some government grants to their overly exorbitant salaries and they’ll get over it.

World Series, World Cup, the list goes on and on. Was Krishna Sukul the only Canadian who was offended by "World Youth Day"?

Is the Pope Catholic?
