The White Star

July 2, 2003

In the everybody’s-a-victim, solidly politically correct world of Canada’s largest newspaper, everybody could be a racist--down to the last one of us.

Latest on the Toronto Star’s racist hit list are the Toronto Blue Jays. Our boys of summer woke up to find their pictures, full colour on the newspaper’s June 28 front page.

"The White Jays?" asked the headline. "In a city of so many multi-cultural faces, Toronto’s baseball team is the whitest in the league. Why?"

Many Jays players were understandably upset by the story, which happened to coincide with the teams’ opening-day roster.

Canadafreepress.com agrees with Jays first baseman Carlos Delgado: "It was probably the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen," said Delgado. "If this city is so multicultural, if this city is so open-minded, why do we have to come up with an article that talks about racism? It doesn’t make any sense."

And this is how Jays centre fielder Vernon Wells, one of the three black players on the team rated the story: "It’s unfortunate this came about. We’ve had a good situation here since Day 1. Guys have gotten along and it’s been special. Nothing like this is going to stop us."

Now the Jays may know firsthand how Star-hounded local police feel in being accused of racism in the Star’s so-called racial profiling series, in which Star reporters were singled out for praise in the "public service" Michener Awards.

It is less than likely fans will stop going to Blue Jay games all because the Star is suggesting that the club is racist.

Unfortunately, activists who get coverage in the newspaper continue to condemn police.

Some of us have noticed that the accusatory Toronto Star is the whitest in the newspaper industry. Why?

Here’s an opportunity for University of Toronto criminology expert Scott Wortley, whose studies were used to accuse the police of racial profiling, to prove he’s really sincere about ridding the world of racism. Wortley should probe why there are not too many "multi-cultural faces" at the Toronto Star.

We’re waiting, Professor Wortley.
