Martin hired by United Nations

August 8, 2003

What does Hernando de Soto mean when he says Canadian Prime-Minister-in-waiting Paul Martin is going to try to do "some very untraditional things…that takes a lot of guts"?

Martin, who was poised to meet with United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan this week, will be appointed to serve as co-chair of a UN commission, struck to help private-sector economies of developing countries.

De Soto, through his website, was the main source of the news of the news of Martin’s ascension to the UN appointment. He will also serve on the same UN commission.

Who is Hernando de Soto?

De Soto is a member of the World Commission on the Global Dimension of Globalization, co-chaired by Ms. Tarja Halonen, President of Finland and Benjamin Mkapa, President of Tanzania.

De Soto was chosen as one of the five leading Latin American innovators of the century by Time magazine it its special May 1999 issue on Leaders of the New Millennium, and Forbes magazine, in its 85th anniversary edition, included him among 15 innovators "who will reinvent your future."

The innovator, "destined to reinvent your future" is leading a campaign to use property rights and capitalism to fight poverty in the Third World, mainly through the establishment of land-registry systems.

That campaign is outlined in his latest book, The Mystery of Capital, touted as a brilliant blueprint for revolution by the likes of Martin and former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

Do De Soto, Annan, and company see something behind the vanilla pudding bland exterior of Martin that Canadians don’t yet see?
