Jumping the queue

by Judi McLeod

September 8, 2003

Don’t believe for an instant that the October 2 Ontario election somehow gives a leg up to well-known queue jumper Barbara Hall.

Consider the source: The "provincial-election-favours-Hall" theory surfaced on the Barbara Hall web page, as soon as the provincial election writ was dropped, Sept. 2.

Ontario’s provincial election will be fought and won more than a month before the all-important municipal election on Nov. 10.

Now that September has replaced a summer of SARS, West Nile Virus worries and a major blackout, interest in Toronto’s mayoral race is picking up steam.

Toronto Free Press always believed that the Toronto mayoralty would be fought and won between the dates of September 2 and November 10.

At this juncture, given the allegations of Ontario Municipal Election Act violations by the Friends of Barbara Hall group, there is no guarantee Hall will even be in the race, let alone bask in a position of favour, courtesy of an Oct. 2 provincial election.

But even if Hall remains in the ring, the mayor’s race is still an epic fight between Toronto’s left and right. The main race thus far has been between Hall and former budget chief Tom Jakobek--something that Hall herself has been proving by her very conduct out on the daily hustings.

Fallacies and falsehoods have had a big part to play in the Toronto mayor’s race to date.

Some quarters are working feverishly on this one:…"Everyone seems to be saying that Jakobek is the best candidate in the race, but has no chance--the wishful thinking of a more than usual Machiavellian smear campaign.

As far as Toronto Free Press is concerned: Jakobek is the best candidate in the race, and media-blessed political opponents notwithstanding, has the best chance to be Toronto’s mayor.
