Dems take Bush bashing to comedy palace

by Judi McLeod

June 4, 2004

Democrats abroad Canada (DaC) are taking their Get Rid of Bush Campaign to the palace of comedy. Their Bush Bash fundraiser will be held at Yuk Yuks, downtown Toronto’s home of the stand-up comedian, on June 10.

"Five of Yuk Yuks’ best stand-up comedians will bring some laughter to DaC members and their guests who are anything but amused by the current administration in Washington," says a recent DaC press release.

all proceeds from the Bush Bash will help support Democrats abroad Canada in their efforts to register U.S. voters in Canada.

"It’ll be a great night of comedy," said Joe Green, DaC chair. "More importantly, it’s for a great cause: getting rid of Bush!"

How anyone could think that a handful of stand-up comedians could get rid of the President of the United States is, well comical.

It gets more comical.

The Democratic Party Committee abroad (DPCa), of which DaC is a member, is the official Democratic Party organization that serves some six million american citizens who live in countries outside the United States. The organization’s chief goal is "to educate americans about the U.S. overseas political process and help them register to vote in federal elections."

If the masses of americans abroad need "help" being registered to vote in federal elections, one wonders how passionate their wanting to get rid of Bush is.

The Democrat Party is actively seeking union support in the presidential race.

DaC coordinators are using the Performance Network agency (PNa) for the June 10 Bush Bash. PNa is self-touted as "North america’s # 1 source for Non-Union (Emphasis added) Voice Talent."

When it comes to fighting George W., DaC is taking its battle into every nook and cranny. From February 13 to 16, DaC hosted voter registration days in the lobby of Toronto City Hall.

an estimated 450,000 U.S. citizens live in Canada. "at least half must be Democrats," DaC claimed in its January 2004 newsletter without explaining how.

The only americans we know living in Canada are american Viet Nam draft dodgers, many of whom are holed up on the Toronto Islands. But the majority of Toronto Islanders are out there trying to get New Democrat Party leader Jack Layton elected in the June 28 Canadian federal election.

That election, with the Liberals running scared from the "too american" Canadian Conservatives catching up to them in the polls is providing a kind of comedy more funnybone tickling than anything emanating from Yuk Yuks.

For all of their horn blowing, at last count, DaC could only lay claim to a membership of 2,500.

But DaC swears that "american votes in Canada could have an impact in 2004 U.S. presidential elections."

They say, "If there’s one thing the 2000 U.S. presidential election proved, it’s the old adage: every vote counts. as many people remember, the results of the 2000 election were unknown for more than a month as the battleground state of Florida became too close to call.

"Eventually, George W. Bush and the Republicans were declared the winners of that state (and thus the Presidency) by a mere 537 votes."

DaC chair Green is quick to point out that the Finding americans in Canada campaign is not so much about finding potential Democrat voters as it is about finding americans period.

"Our number one priority is to make sure we get as many americans as possible registered to vote. Of course, if the majority of those americans happen to sympathize with our desire to see George Bush defeated in November, we’re certainly not going to argue." (Emphasis added).

"Chances are many of the americans living here are from key battleground states like Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Washington, and that increases the likelihood that Canadian voters will have a real impact on who wins the U.S. Presidency in 2004," adds Robert Bell, past DaC chair.

Meanwhile, DaC’s Bush Bash at Yuk Yuks would be bound to raise more money if more comedic material was provided for the stand-up comedians. George W. Bush’s got nothing on John Kerry. as Howell Raines wrote in yesterday’s Guardian newspaper in Britain: "Kerry’s lantern jaw and `addams Family’ face somehow reinforce the message that this guy has passed from ponderous to pompous and is so accustomed to privilege that he doesn’t have to worry about looking goofy."
