The Dean of White House Press Corps. & The aBC Club

Toronto--Veteran reporter Helen Thomas of "If-Cheney-runs-I'll-kill-myself" fame may have spoken too rashly.

according to cyberwagers, the odds are that Vice President Dick Cheney would be the likely winner of the 2008 race for the White House should he decide to run.

The popular online gambling site, Sportsbook.com claims that Cheney's odds improved from 100-1 in May to his current level of 20-1.

Thomas is a passionate member of the aBC (anybody but Cheney) club.

The "Dean of the White House Press Corps" is also an advocate of the Bob Woodward predicting politics school. Woodward, a Washington Post reporter, noted in a column that Cheney is a "serious dark horse" candidate for 2008.

It was apparently Woodward who started a panic by darkhorsing the veep.

Thomas' longtime friend, albert Eisele, editor of The Hill newspaper in Washington, D.C. ran Woodward's theory in his "Under the Dome" column.

"The day Dick Cheney is going to run for president, I'll kill myself," Thomas was quoted by Eisele. "all we need is one more liar."

Thomas, who said she was merely ranting to a friend, with no idea she would be quoted in the column, is miffed with Eisele.

She has more reason to be miffed now.

according to Sportsbook.com, Cheney's improving odds are the result of recent news reports covering the possibility Cheney may toss his hat into the ring, despite his consistent statements denying he's interested in the top job.

Woodward has kept up the notion of Cheney for President. The Watergate reporter said in a recent Colorado speech that he expects Cheney to take a shot at the White House in three years, going toe to toe against Democrat Senator Hillary Clinton.

Woodward told the Denver Post, "He would be 67 if he ran and was elected. Reagan was 69. Republicans always like the old warhorse…both parties like to nominate vice presidents…Cheney would do it, and I think it's highly likely, so stay tuned.

Staying tuned is Helen Thomas, who might be relieved to hear that while the odds are improving for Cheney, two Republicans have better odds at Sportsbook.com–former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani at 10-1–and arizona Senator John McCain at 12-1.

Odds on long shots include leftist filmmaker Michael Moore with the long odds of 7,500-1.

Nor can Thomas find any relief by thinking that it's just so much cyberwagering.

Sportsbook.com bettors have proven right about the winning teams of football and hockey games and for correctly predicting the outcome of storylines in the Reality TV world.
