Peter MacKay

The love interests of Canada's dopey Conservative deputy leader

In Canada, the term "golddigger" has just undergone a sex change.

The proverbial gold digger image usually comes wrapped in stilettos and lipstick.

Peter MacKay, deputy leader of the Conservative Party, must be Canada's goofiest gadfly gold digger. When the Tory politician's love interests were last in headlines, it was last Spring when floor-crossing MP Belinda Stronach was dumping him.

Blonde billionairess Belinda first mesmerized the Conservative's dopey deputy leader, then dumped her beloved at the same time she abandoned the Conservative Party for the election-proof Liberals.

Incredibly, conservative colleagues gave their cuckolded colleague a standing ovation when he returned to the House of Parliament after being dumped by Mati Hari.

Pictures of MacKay, as the "dumpee" healing at his father's farm, complete with loyal, sad-looking dog at his side, were carried in daily newspapers.

Completely missed by the love-struck swain during the course of that star-crossed romance was that Belinda, daughter of billionaire Frank Stronach of auto parts fame, was getting ready to stab his boss, Conservative Leader Stephen Harper in his very vulnerable blue back.

Now it's mistletoe season and "one of Ottawa's most eligible bachelors" is dating another blonde billionairess.

"This time it's Sophie Desmarais of the wealthy Power Corp. family." (National Post, Nov. 26).

While his party was preparing for today's expected non-confidence vote against the ruling Liberal Government, Harper's right hand man has been bitten by the love bug---again!

Petey and Miss Sophie have been spotted together around snow-bound Ottawa, including last week when she watched her man in Question Period-- from the Opposition gallery in the House of Commons.

according to the National Post, they exchanged glances in the midst of all the rancorous pre-election debate and had dinner plans that night at Beckta, a popular restaurant favoured by many of Ottawa's politicians, including Cabinet ministers."

That's a tabloid romance, Canada style just bound to melt your backyard snowman.

We don't know what this does for the Conservative deputy leader's political career, but now that he's shown a marked preference for heiresses, he's almost John Kerry, Canuck version.

Prince Charles has his Camilla and Mackay has his Sophie.

For any dying to know how Pete and Sophie ever met, blame it on the Mulroneys. The two met at dinner at former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and wife Mila's house.

Guess when he's not chasing writer Peter Newman through the courts for telling all in his latest book, Mulroney is a matchmaker.

"Mrs. Mulroney thinks highly of Mr. MacKay, and knows Ms. Desmarais." (National Post).

But it won't apparently take as long as Chuck and Camilla for the couple's winter romance to blossom.

"The romance is at an early stage but is understood to have developed fairly quickly, according to sources. "She gave him a little peck on the cheek as they left," said one source who had seen them together."

as time goes by, a kiss is just a kiss in the general scheme of things, but in civil servant-studded Ottawa, a little peck on the cheek puts the finishing touch on a coming love story of epic proportions.

Ms. Desmarais is the daughter of Paul Desmarais Sr. and is in the sister of andre, who is the son-in-law of former prime minister Jean Chretien.

It's the same family who hired Canadian billionire Maurice Strong as Power Corp. CEO, who in turn hired current Prime Minister Paul Martin. Then Martin grew up to replace Chretien as prime minister and hired his mentor strong as a senior adviser.

This story has enough twists and turns to make an ongoing television soap opera.

You can find out much more about Mackay's prospectives in-laws by catching up on the Desmarais and their alleged roles in the ongoing United Nations oil-for-food scandal.

Here we have Stephen Harper–finally (and some would say, mercifully) doing everything humanly possible to distinguish his party from that of the Paul Martin Liberals and this is where his own deputy leader has brought him: If the relationship develops, it would put MacKay dab at the centre of a very powerful Liberal-supporting dynasty. and that's not even taking into consideration the pillow talk and dinner table talk potential that could make security a joke for the newly-formed Conservative Party of Canada.

Meanwhile MacKay, who has definite leadership ambitions, has thus far not ever been able to prove that Conservatives really are better than Liberals. But the lightweight politicians does lay a lot of credence to the theory about power and money being the catnip of ahprodisiacs.
