Shawn Carmichael

Canadian farmers an endangered species, courtesy of their own government?

Shawn Carmichael, the father of six children, who lost the fingers of one hand in a farming accident, was set upon from behind and beaten by security guards employed by the Canadian Food Inspection agency (CFIa) on Monday.

Carmichael was trying to serve the CIFa with a notice of claim, regarding "the intentional and willful destruction" of his private property during a March 23 CIFa-led raid on his farm when the alleged beating took place.

accompanied by members of the Ontario Landowners association (OLa), the farmer showed up at CFIa Ottawa headquarters at 59 Camelot Drive at approximately 11 a.m.

as most taxpayers would do, Carmichael and OLa members had tried to enter the public building by its front door. They discovered that the building was locked down and were informed that no members of the public at large would be admitted. after their repeated requests for an audience with CFIa president Francois Gumont were turned down, the group left peacefully.

Carmichael proceeded on his own to the back door of the building, where he rang a buzzer before being allowed entry.

Resolute and full of hope, Carmichael was carrying the court documents he thought would find him relief in his one good hand, when he was attacked from behind.

Taken off guard, he suffered "repeated punches and attacks" to his back and neck. The physically handicapped injured farmer managed to escape out the same door he had been allowed to enter.

Prior to the Ottawa visit, the OLa members had tired to do the right thing by requesting police assistance in serving the documents on the bureaucrats. Staff Sergeant al Martel, of the Ottawa Police, and three other officers, who were in attendance, filed assault charges against the CIFa and its employees.

Carmichael's account of the beating is further borne out by Dr. Thomas, a Kemptville hospital physician who attended to injuries that were serious enough to require X-rays. Diagnosed with skin and muscle damage to his neck and back, Carmichael left the hospital in a neck brace.

"It is indeed a black day for all Canadians when private citizens are attacked and beaten by government employees while attempting to deliver court documents," said OLa president Randy Hillier. "Furthermore, it is incredible that a government agency would "lock down" a public building and deny public access in an attempt to circumvent the delivery of court papers."

It seems that government bureaucrats at both the Ontario provincial level and in Ottawa have stepped up their campaign of harassment and intimidation against farmers and landowners.

Unfortunately, impunity is provided for the bureaucrats when the mainstream pays little attention to the plight of the farmers and landowners.

Since the March 23 raid on his farm, the CFIa and health unit have been confiscating Carmichael's eggs from his customers. The information necessary to trace the customers came from Carmichael's own government-confiscated computer.

In a desperate effort to keep his built up client base, Carmichael replaced all eggs confiscated, at a cost of about $12,000.

Even though Carmichael has an aaa grade grading station on his farm, the CFIa and health unit agents claim that his eggs are improperly graded.

Yet no charges have ever been laid, nor have any offers of compensation been offered as a result of the March 23 CFIa-led raid on the Carmichael farm.

Government bureaucrats have maintained a high hand against the farmers during the past few years.

Bureaucrats show about as much mercy as they do commonsense in their treatment of the farmers.

accompanied by armed Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) constables, Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) raided the home of a 78-year-old war veteran and his 80-year-old wife on Oct. 20,2004.

The heavy hand of the MNR came down on the war vet all because he was alleged to have killed a goose on March 30, 2004,

Why authorities made their late day call on the elderly war vet some eight months later was never explained.

another local farmer and member of the Lanark Land association (LLa) was charged on Sept. 28, 2004 with the heinous crime of shooting a ground hog; other farmers have been slapped with fines for removing nuisance deer from their own properties,

Meanwhile, Hillier is demanding that the CFIa videotape of the Carmichael attack be made public to the media.

"Government bureaucrats are not above the law and must be held to account for their vile actions on May 1, 2006," Hillier says.
