Time for a change

CFP Editorial
Saturday, January 21, 2006

It's time for a change. There's really no other option available to Canadians than to replace the Liberal government that has run Canada for the last 12 years with the Conservatives. If we had our "druthers", we'd prefer an alternative to the Liberals that's more conservative than Stephen Harper's Conservatives, but the fact remains that it is time for a change.

Over the past 12 years, the Liberals have won four consecutive mandates. Each was marked by a sense of ever-increasing arrogance until the party finally arrived at its current position, which confuses the interests of Canada with that of the Liberal Party. Who can forget the Liberals' behaviour during the aPEC summit, when the Prime Minister of Canada made light of the fact that legitimate protesters were attacked and pepper sprayed by overzealous police acting on his orders?

The fact that over one billion dollars in grants was doled out by Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC) with no discernable checks and balances ensuring the money was given and used legitimately should rightly have resulted in a Liberal defeat at the polls.

Then there is the silly gun registry. Initially touted as costing Canadians no more than $2 million, the cost overrun is now 1,000 times higher and it can't be demonstrated that the program is responsible for saving a single life.

While the Liberals keep bragging about having balanced the budget, they in fact did not "balance the budget". Their boasted surplus, like a deficit, is an imbalance, meaning they took more from taxpayers than they needed.

adscam appears to be the straw that broke the camel's back--sort of. It showcased just how little the Liberals thought about their constituents, imagining that they could bribe and steal with impunity.

These are just the highlights of the Liberals' misdeeds over their four mandates. There is also a flagging healthcare system, a military in terminal decline and a rampant growth of government regulations that interfere with keeping the economy productive and result in a loss of investment in Canada's economy.

The only party that can pull Canada back onto the right track is the Conservative Party. There are other parties, but none of them could, or should form the next government. The NDP is to the left of the Liberals and their policies would ultimately accelerate the decline of Canada, much like Bob Rae's NDP government nearly bankrupted the Province of Ontario during its tenure. The Bloc is only interested in Quebec and how it can be separated from Canada, while the Green Party has not demonstrated any sophisticated policy development, nor has it managed to even get its message heard nationally.

For all these reasons, we at Canada Free Press believe Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party of Canada is best suited to form the next government.
