Mexico, Bounty Hunting

Dog the Bounty Hunter's fans in doghouse without Duane

By Judi McLeod

Tuesday, December 5, 2006

Fans have been in the doghouse ever since Duane Chapman, his son Leland and Tim Chapman were arrested by US Marshals at the request of the Mexican government.

Chapman is "Dog, the Bounty Hunter," the unlikely star of reality television, where just like the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Dog and family always get their man.

The popularity of this television show leans heavily on the premise that people tend to root for the underdog and even more so for an underdog who came from behind to turn his life around.

It was destined that Chapman, who is real, would suit reality television.

Dog The Bounty Hunter Here's a guy who actually captured convicted fugitive rapist andrew Luster, heir to Max Factor cosmetics, after he went on the lam and hightailed it to Mexico. No small time shyster, Luster now serving a 124-year prison sentence, raped three women.

The Dog attached the brightest colored american Indian feather to his signature hair ornament for catching Luster, and who could blame him?

But for Duane, Leland and Tim the story didn't end there. The hard working trio was busted three years later for bounty hunting, which could be the only thing illegal in Mexico.

at last count, the three bounty hunters, released on bail, were awaiting a November extradition hearing. Duane's wife, and business partner Beth had to come up with $300,000 for Duane and $100,000 for each for the two boys.

Friends are always surprised that I'm an admitted fan of Dog the Bounty Hunter.

"But they're so tacky," lamented one, her words laced with a chuckle.

To me, Dog and Company are lovably tacky.

Dog, who's been there, has a lived-in kind of face. Some of his getups are well, pure Dog.

When they're going out bounty hunting, the family gets together in a circle to cross themselves before saying a prayer.

Even though Beth constantly nags him, Dog just can't give up the weed.

Down to earth, everybody is plain "bro" to Dog, who will enter almost any haunt to nab bail jumpers.

an ex-convict himself, Dog know what it's like to live on the other side. The kindness he shows his captives once he's handcuffed them is somewhat endearing. He admonishes them on the way to being turned in, reminding them of their mothers, fathers, wives and children. Looking baleful in the backseat, the captive gets a lighted cigarette if he happens to be smoker.

a father to 10 children, Dog is always overextended time wise. But there is always enough love in Dog and Beth's home life for their pet canines.

after staying together for some 16 years, Duane and Beth were married on May 20, 2006, one day after the groom's daughter, Barbara Katy Chapman, the 23-year-old mother of 4-year-old Travis was killed in a car accident in alaska. after checking with family members, the couple went ahead with the nuptials to celebrate Barbara's life.

The Da Kine Bail Bonds, from which the closely tied family conducts its business, is a familiar sight on the a& E television show

Through thick and thin, in life's ups and downs, Duane Chapman clings to the everyday philosophy that anyone can get their life together if they try harder, and it's never too late to try.

Dog calls it "dogisms" rather than philosophy.

Before being busted, Dog was working on a book, You Can Run But You Can't Hide: The Life and Times of Dog the Bounty Hunter. Perhaps because of the upcoming trial, the February 2007 release of the book has been indefinitely postponed.

Some media outlets mock Dog for wearing special boots that make him appear to be 5'10" when he's only 5'7". But fans would counter that he stands tall and walks brave all the same.

Ditto for his praying on television, which some claim is politically correct.

Dog isn't they type to seek out the path of least resistance.

Despite the lovable tacky look, Duane and Beth are professionals and are from the old school of doing whatever you do well.

Their out of the ordinary website www.dogthebountyhunter.com is a testament to that belief.

Meanwhile multiple legal defense funds have been set up for Duane, Leland and Tim including one set up by Ms. Tonja "Doe", a victim of andrew Luster. (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

While Mexican authorities wait for the sound of the clang of the prison door, television fans wait to hear the theme song the television show Dog, The Bounty Hunter, included on the Prince of Darkness album. Fans know that the tune always signals the start of another Dog The Bounty Hunter episode.
