Toronto: In advance of Toronto city council meeting on July 16th to vote on imposing new taxes, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF)) today released results of a public opinion poll. The poll was conducted by Holinshed Research Group for the CTF on (1) the level of awareness in Toronto about the impending new taxes, and (2) whether Torontonians support city council raising revenues using these new powers.
Very High Awareness of the New Toronto Taxes
When Torontonians were asked whether they are aware that the city of Toronto is considering a variety of new taxes within the city of Toronto 77.9% expressed awareness of the impending new taxes - 38.1% somewhat aware and 39.8% very aware. "This high awareness suggests people in Toronto are very plugged in to the mayor's efforts to hike taxes. Despite the mayor's efforts to fast-track the taxes under the radar and during the Summer, people are paying attention", said Kevin Gaudet, CTF Ontario Director.
Very Strong Opposition to the New Toronto Taxes
When asked whether they support city council generating revenue through new taxes such as a garbage tax, a land transfer tax, a vehicle registration tax, a liquor sales tax, and a billboard tax; respondents overwhelmingly at 74.1% oppose the new taxes. Further analysis shows that among those who are aware of the plans for new taxes, opposition to the taxes is even higher at 77.0%. Gaudet said, "regardless of gender, age or income there is no support in Toronto for these new taxes".
The telephone poll was conducted June 28th and 29th among 402 Toronto adults aged 18 years and older. The results are considered accurate +/- 4.89%, 19 times out of 20.
The poll results are available at the Canadian Taxpayers Federation
