Sampling of articles in last few days – May 18, 2007 – Round Up

(Note: See bottom of this page for comments on Reuters silly article about Exxon-Mobile funding of "skeptics')

A 15 YEAR OLD SCHOOLKID PUTS Alarmists to shame: Kristen Byrnes of Portland High School produced intense scientific analysis of global warming fears. Her report: The Facts and Fictions of Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" During the 4 months she wrote this paper, she maintained a grade point average of 4.0 while participating on her school's track and field team. Her most recent batch of progress reports average 98.4% with 100% in 4 classes. All of her classes are honors or college prep.

Link to Kristen's full report: (Unfortunately, I do not have exact date this paper was written)

Norwegian Arctic climate researchers question warming models - Geology Professor Morten Hald Excerpt: "The main problem is that these models are often based on relatively new climate data. The thermometer has only been in existence for 150 years and information on temperature which is 150 years old does not capture the large natural changes."

Paleoclimate researcher Bob Carter's new paper: "The myth of dangerous human-caused climate change' (.pdf) – ("Brief analysis of greenhouse theory, and a critique of the climate alarmism of the IPCC" (Australasian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy, "New Leaders" conference, Brisbane, May 2-3, 2007, Proceedings p. 61-74.)

And now for the most humorous and ill-conceived news item of the day…

Note: Reuters & CNN make no mention of $30 Billion, yes, Billion that Federal government spends on global warming or the funding of well-heeled environmental special interests groups that fuel climate alarmism.

Key excerpt: "The (climate) alarmists also enjoy a huge financial advantage over the skeptics with numerous foundations funding climate research, University research money and the United Nations endless promotion of the cause.

Just how much money do the climate alarmists have at their disposal? There was a $3 billion donation to the global warming cause from Virgin Air's Richard Branson alone. The well-heeled environmental lobbying groups have massive operating budgets compared to groups that express global warming skepticism. The Sierra Club Foundation 2004 budget was $91 million and the Natural Resources Defense Council had a $57 million budget for the same year. Compare that to the often media derided Competitive Enterprise Institute's small $3.6 million annual budget.

In addition, if a climate skeptic receives any money from industry, the media immediately labels them and attempts to discredit their work. The same media completely ignore the money flow from the environmental lobby to climate alarmists like James Hansen and Michael Oppenheimer. (ie. Hansen received $250,000 from the Heinz Foundation and Oppenheimer is a paid partisan of Environmental Defense Fund) The alarmists have all of these advantages, yet they still feel the need to resort to desperation tactics to silence the skeptics."

Links of interest on this funding topic:

"The Bush administration, after all, is by far the largest funder of global warming alarmism, pouring about $30 billion of federal dollars into climate- and alternative energy-related research over the last six years. Many of the beneficiaries of this taxpayer largesse, particularly NASA's James Hansen, have become media darlings."

Boston Globe column dealing with financial imbalance between alarmists and skeptics: Excerpt: "What about the lucrative and prestigious prizes global-warming alarmists have received? NASA's James Hansen, a prominent global-warming Cassandra, won a $250,000 Heinz Award in 2001. Last month he was a co-winner of the Dan David Prize and its $1 million purse."
