iPho... iPod News Coming Soon?

By Joshua S. Hill

Sunday, September 2, 2007

The iPhone is only fresh out of the box, but already Apple are gearing up for the release -- we think -- of the newest version of the iPod. It is big news sweeping the tech industry, with invitations going out for their "special event" held in San Francisco, on September 5th, entitled "The beat goes on".

For the past several weeks various reports have been filtering in regarding what many experts are predicting as "the iPhone without the phone". Essentially what we're expecting to see is a new iPod, in the same style as the iPhone, but without the obvious telephonic functionality (or lack thereof depending on who you talk too) built in.

The advent of the touch screen has been a great boom for Apple, and other giants like Microsoft are also on the bandwagon (in Microsoft's case, there could be an argument made that they got there first, but I'm not in for semantics). So with glowing reports filtering in for the touch screen of the iPhone, it was the natural next step to take that functionality and give it to the iPod.

Hardwarical investigations over the past few weeks and months have seen an uptick in hard drive purchases as well as touch screens purchased by Apple. Whether this was for extending the iPhone's reach internationally or for the new rumored iPod is unclear, and will most likely be made very clear at the upcoming event.

The timing is also just right for an announcement from Apple introducing a new iPod, with only a few months (*shudder*) until the Christmas season hits us with all its commercial ferocity. Apple has never been one to let a Holiday season go by without a new iPod design to thrill fanboys worldwide, and I doubt that this year is going to be any different.

So what are we expecting?

40 and 80 gig iPods, with touch screens is the best bet, with Nano sized iPods to reach us sometime next year. Corresponding with such a big announcement though, could be the addition of the Beatles catalogue to the iTunes library. So whether there could be a Beatles iPod has sent some rumor-mongers scurrying to their keyboards, but the likelihood of either is low.

They've had good sales figures for the past 6 years, ever since the first iPod made its international debut, and with the success of the iPhone in the relatively small market of American's who can afford and subsequently want an iPhone, it is no surprise that they have steamrolled right in to the touch screen iPod release.

We'll all have to wait and see what happens, but you of Daily Galaxy will hear from me the moment we get any information, so stay tuned!
