Rebels have taken the Gadhafi compound in the city of Tripoli, Libya…the compound burning.
Celebrations have erupted as the rebels rejoice over their claim of victory over the dictator who has held power for over 40 years. The fighting; ongoing since February.
But Libyans were not without help in deposing their leader—the United States helped.
It was my understanding that the United States (under President George W. Bush) was not interested in fighting wars unless our country was threatened. We are currently involved in ridding the Mid-East of leaders…leaders who may not be all together desirable to rule, but nevertheless, they led stable countries.
President Bush never bothered to push Moammar Gadhafi from power but embraced him. As long as regimes were not a threat to the United States, we didn’t bother them.
Some will make the argument that Saddam Hussein was not a threat to the United States…but as I’ve said many times before, he was indeed a threat…and I add to that the brutal oppression of his own people, and supplying terrorists with funds and weapons. But he’s old news and it was time for him to go.
I have to call into question what our role is in Tripoli in deposing Gadhafi. What benefit will it have for the United States? Why did the U.S. open another war front in Libya, working undercover to rid Libya of Gadhafi?
The Obama administration also had a hand in deposing Egypt of its leader Hosni Mubarak who was a friend to Israel and had a peace pact with them. Mubarak fled his country as his government and power is all but stripped from him.
Now the Obama administration is pressuring Syria’s Bashar Assad to step down as well. These regimes were relatively stable.
What comes into question is how are we backing Israel in all of this? Who replaces these leaders when they are deposed? Will it be hard-lined Islamic radicals who take power and threaten our most staunch ally in the Mid-East?
It is interesting that the Obama administration would back the validity of the Iranian government of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, even as protests erupted over corruption at the polls during a recent election in 2009. The United States ignored the cries of those against Ahmadinejad’s regime, but now mysteriously supports getting rid of other more peaceful regimes.
Iran has made advances towards nuclear weaponry and has said of Israel that it should be wiped off the face of the earth.
No move has been made to confront Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over his comments or to hold him accountable. Iran has sent weapons to militants in Iraq and to the Taliban in Afghanistan putting civilian lives and our troops in danger. Is the Obama administration watching that regime? Iran is more of a threat.
The United States should only act only with its interests in mind; with the American people in mind. Libya’s Gadhafi was not a threat. Hosni Mubarak was not a threat. Syria isn’t a threat.
So yes, the United States is toppling governments one by one—like dominoes, UNECESSARILY! Sad thing is our tax dollars are paying for it. We need to ask ourselves: Why are we in Tripoli (even with the help of NATO forces) and are we in the position to open new war fronts with the current financial state in which the United States finds itself?
The United States should commit its focus to the TRUE threat and leave unnecessary Mid-East skirmishes/uprisings to simmer on their own.
