You can’t know how they built the “Temple” ‘till you know where we fit in…
Considered the World’s “oldest living religion,” Hinduism consists of thousands of different religious groups that have evolved in India since 1500 BC. Because of the wide variety of Hindu traditions, freedom of belief and practice are notable features of Hinduism. Some one-billion people on and around the subcontinent of India believe many different things.
Of some importance, the cast system and the relegation of women stand out as main beliefs which Indians/Hindus don’t seem to mind. They also believe in Karma, that notion that the “godhead” gives around what goes around; or, do good to others and they will do good to you. The “good” people of India and surrounding countries have other beliefs including re-incarnation; re-incarnation as animals, gods and goddesses, etc… Hinduism believes in the Truth insofar as the truth is “one.” It is fair to say, on the other hand, that cows are not people. Enough said.
Another one of the world’s oldest religions, Buddhism, was practiced some six centuries before Christ and has a following (if you count both main “branches”) as large as 500-million, mostly in Asia. Half-a-billion people believe that you are conceived, born, live until a natural death under the power of Karma, die a carnal death and, literally, are reborn again; and again; and again. Presuming the good Buddhist reaches Nirvana, (complete indifference toward any person or thing) he might literally be reborn as a Deity, a part of a literal Godhead. Obviously, a strict moral code is not required if you are striving for indifference and striving to be a god. Of the 1.5 or so Billion people in China, between 45-60% of them are agnostic and/or atheist. Further imagine less than 5% of their population are Christian. Buddhism too seeks the Truth and insofar as it does, we applaud them.
Six-hundred years after the death of Jesus, Islam was reportedly revealed to a man named Muhammad by the Archangel Gabriel (that sounds familiar). Furthermore, Islam claims to be an Abrahamic religion in the direct path of salvation history descended from Adam, Abraham, Moses and Jesus. There are volumes of things I could comment on at this point, but I will summarize by saying this: Though they use the old-testament scriptures in their lessons, the Qur’an is its main structure and is built on 144 Suras or paragraphs. The Qur’an is anything but peaceful. I have read their “Bible” the Qur’an, four times and I can tell you, that book extols spreading their “faith” by the sword it says in black and white that the Jews are not fully human. The Muhammadans have lost all of their several attempts to take over the World. But, forget that for a moment; the Muslims deny the divinity of Christ and the Triune nature of God. Their moral code is strict within their different tribal formations. They do believe in family and children and being good to those inside their “circles” or in their own faith – oh yes, and to those who are good to them read here as “compliant with them.” The point here is that they make up nearly 25% of the Earth’s population or about 1.7-billion, (that’s billion with a “B”) people.
Of the World’s mainstream religions, not counting Catholics, there are one-billion Hindus; one-half billion Buddhists; 1.7 billion Muslims; that’s 3.2 billion people! Who, and what religion(s) make up the remaining 3.5 billion people? Catholics and “other” Christians claim around 2.1 billion followers. Another one-billion people world-wide claim to have no religion at all! That leaves around 7% of the population that hasn’t been accounted for, but in a world of nearly 7-billion, that’s not bad.
For the atheists and the 7%, it seems childish to think that a radical chaos before, during and after the “big bang” would lead to a perfect planet and upright humans. If you believe that “it” is all a cosmic accident, then, next time you’re in a junk yard, close your eyes, wish really hard and then if you open your eyes, you should see, formed from all the “junk,” a fully operational Boeing 747, right?
For the sake of comparison, let’s boil-down the core of mainstream beliefs:
- Atheists: Don’t believe (get it?);
- Buddhists: Believe in The Three Basic Truths;
- Hindus: Believe in Yama and Niyama (things you cannot or can do);
- Muslims: Believe in God and live by Sharia Law;
- Catholics (Christians): Believe in a Triune God and live by Natural Law, informed by Divine Law;
