"It gives them access to the health care exchanges in Obamacare under the ordinary rules of residency in the states in which they live and makes them eligible for subsidies if and when they file taxes — just like the rest of us. It also subjects them to the individual mandate that requires individuals to have health insurance. The goal is to make integration and inclusion real for millions of families that are locked out under current law."As Gutierrez points out, Rep. Joe Wilson famously called President Obama a liar when, during the State of the Union address, he promised that illegals would not be covered under the ACA. ....Of course Gutierrez conveniently forgets that this moment drew attention to the matter, created considerable pressure on the administration, and sealed the fate of the illegal coverage they were seeking. Basically, the law would never have passed had illegals been covered. Even then, conservatives argued that, eventually, progressives would extend coverage to them - in exactly the way Gutierrez is demanding. In essence Gutierrez and Chu have proven that not only were conservatives right about progressives' initial desires, they were also right about what their intentions would be after the bill had passed. Given the current congressional makeup, the "Exchange Inclusion for a Healthy America Act of 2015" bill will undoubtedly go down in flames. That's great news, and it's probably good to know that we were right all along. Maybe we should just thank Rep. Gutierrez for making us all look so prescient.
