Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff David William March

A decade since Dave left us

imageI will always be painfully honest, work as hard as I can, learn as much as I can, and hopefully make a difference in people’s lives- Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff David William March. I met Dave while he in the Sheriff’s Academy in 1995. I was awe struck by this tall, handsome individual cut from an equally striking March family. Dave projected success from head to toe.
Please put Sunday April 29 on your calendar. Plan to visit the memorial site where Dave was murdered. It was 10 years ago, about 10:40 in the morning, Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Dave March was executed after making a routine traffic stop on Live Oak Blvd, in Irwindale.. For those who may not remember the events surrounding that ominous day, allow me to refresh your memory. Dave pulled over a suspicious vehicle. He met the face of evil when a three-times convicted and twice-deported illegal alien drug dealer, who admitted he intended to kill a law enforcement officer that day, bolted from his vehicle and shot Dave in the chest severely disabling the 7 ½ year veteran deputy. While on the ground, Dave was shot point blank in the head.

A decade has elapsed but his footprint of life forever made an imprint on my world. The coward who shot him fled to Mexico and hid out while the District Attorney wrangled with the Mexican government which stubbornly refused to arrest or extradite Dave’s killer until the Death Penalty was taken off the table. Reluctantly, District Attorney Steve Cooley backed off the Penalty. Four and a half years later, Armando Jose Arroyo Garcia was arrested and several months after the arrest, was extradited to Los Angeles County. This piece of human garbage who murdered Dave pled to Second degree murder. He serves a Life with out Parole sentence in solitary confinement at Calipatria State Prison, in California’s Imperial Valley. To visit the Memorial, here are the directions: 210 Freeway west to 605 south, off at Arrow Highway, right turn which becomes Live Oak Blvd. The site is located about 300 yards east of Myrtle Ave. There will be plenty of LASD Sheriff’s personnel on hand including Sheriff Lee Baca, during the recognition which will run 24 hours, from Sunday 12 midnight to Monday 12 midnight. Dave’s death cold snaps me into remembering the passing of our son, LASD Deputy Tim White, 35, who left us just over two years ago. It sobers me to think the men and woman who make the ultimate sacrifice have such short books of life, but I am energized to say that we who remember those fallen officers are forever changed. I know I was. Like my son, Tim, Dave March lives within me. Each day, every day I reflect on those who protect me from peril. Dave March changed my life and that is no small fete. Prior to Dave’s death, I dismissed the illegal immigration problem as mere adjustments we all need to make in a changing society. Since Dave left us, I know to my core that those who invade our country, flaunt American law, disrespect our culture cause great harm and pose a national danger. In the community in which I lived, I brought this to the attention of the Santa Clarita City Council. On several occasions, I related to the Council the devastating effects of illegal immigration. Each day an average of 13 innocent people are run down and killed by illegal alien unlicensed, uninsured drunk drivers. Each day, 12 innocent people are murdered by illegal aliens who should not be in our country. I related those somber statistics from the office of Iowa Congressman Steve King. Regrettably, I was marginalized and dismissed by the Council except for City Councilman Bob Kellar, who to this day shares my concern. The Council criss-crossed their arms in a gesture evoking there was nothing it could do and casually referred me to my congressman. The anger seethed inside me that local government was so callously indifferent to protecting American citizens against this cultural, physical, and moral assault. I formed a Minuteman chapter to bring awareness to the problem of illegal immigration. As I run for Del Norte County Supervisor in the June 5 Primary, Dave, Tim, and the thousands of law enforcement heroes live within me. To Dave’s parents, John and Barbara March, Dave’s sister, Erin Hildreth, and Dave’s widow Teri, you were so fortunate to have experienced this exceptional person in your lives. With Dave’s death, he became a part of my family and I derive great satisfaction when I hear Dave and Tim’s voices say, “ Go get’em, Roger. You are doing the right thing.” David William March, End of Watch April 29, 2002. Thank you Dave, I will work as hard as I can, learn as much as I can and hopefully make a difference in those who surround me.
