A presidency falling apart

Yesterday, Barack Obama once again rejected Israeli Prime Ministers Benjamin Netanyahu’s request for a meeting because of a scheduling conflict while in New York. In almost the same breath, he announced he’d appear on the David Letterman Show. Of course we all know the president is a very busy man, and he does have his priorities.
Today, he invited Mohammed Morsi, Egypt’s new president and a member of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood to meet with him in New York when the United Nations General Assembly convenes in September. I suppose a time slot must have opened up for such a meeting since yesterday. I have difficulty believing the president when he says he supports Israel. After all, he has snubbed Netanyahu or more than one occasion. Obama should have agreed to a meeting with Netanyahu for four reasons. First, he wants the world to believe that he truly supports Israel and values the friendship of the only truly western-leaning nation in that part of the world. Somehow, his actions toward Israel speak louder than his words. Second, Netanyahu wished to discuss the matter of Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Iran’s nuclear progress is a national security issue for both Israel and the United States.

Third, he makes his refusal of Netanyahu seem capricious. I mean, refusing Netanyahu in favor of Letterman and the Muslim Brotherhood doesn’t seem like the most responsible move for the President of the United States. Fourth, he makes himself less likable politically and personally. I mean really, who disses their friends? But let’s face it. He’s in way over his head and he has no desire to bring his incompetency to the forefront, especially with less than two months before the election. In addition, he’s clearly pandering to what he sees as a rising power in the Middle East and in essence abdicating American leadership and power worldwide. Finally, he continues to apologize to the world for America. The latest act of contrition came just the other day when riots broke out in Egypt and Libya and mobs murdered our envoy and three staff members. Although the apology came from the embassy in Cairo and the White House has attempted to distance itself from it, the apology came from people in this president’s administration. When asked if he considered Egypt an ally, Obama responded that he considered that country neither an ally nor an enemy. However, later, a State Department spokesperson clearly indicated that Egypt continues to be an ally. To the rest of the world it appears that this presidency is falling apart. We have a president more concerned with his re-election campaign than national security. His State Department isn’t on the same page as he is. He and his staff seem to constantly operate in damage control mode. And each day we learn of a new crisis, such as the terrible tragedy surrounding our embassies in Egypt and Libya. And with each new challenge that he fails to meet, our enemies develop a growing contempt for us and grow bolder. They continue to push the envelope to see just how far they can go before we wag our finger at them and admonish them to play nice. Do we really need four more years of this?
