The meeting will provide information concerning the joint efforts of the City of Ottawa and the Ministry of Natural Resources to designate 9000 acres of rural Ottawa as Provincially Significant Wetland. A portion of these lands includes an area in Goulbourn that has become flooded as a result of poor drainage maintenance. That 650 acres includes numerous homes, active farms, and active quarries. Several of these farms have been in continuous production longer than Canada's Confederation. In July 2006, the City agreed to take the necessary steps to remove the drainage obstructions, thereby allowing the lands to return to their natural dry state. Council also directed staff to develop a compensation strategy to be applied in circumstances where classification became necessary. City planning is no longer under the authority of the former Deputy City Manager. Since then his replacement Nancy Schepers has overseen the complete repudiation of prior commitments given to rural taxpayers. IT’S TIME TO FIGHT BACK!!
