Let us praise Him for the continued preservation of the Government of our fathers; for the sublime spirit of patriotism and courage; for the victories won by the valor of our troops; for the glorious share of Minnesota in the struggles and triumphs of the Union cause; for the safety of her sons who have passed through the fire of battle unscathed, and the honorable fame of the gallant dead; for the tokens manifest of His will, that through the blood, sweat, suffering, and sacrifice, the nation is to be saved from its great criminal calamity. That behind the thunder and lightning of the tempest, the form of Jehovah is visible descending to renew the broken tablets of the Constitution and to proclaim fresh ones as the condition and law of a restored and regenerated Union. Though our sins are many, He has not ceased His merciful dispensations toward us, sparing us from pestilence and famine. He has preserved this State in peace and health, and, in due allegiance, to a loyal devotion to the government of these United States. While in portions of the Confederacy where the desolating visitations of civil war are fulfilling the penalty for impious rebellion against His Ordinances and the fundamental covenants of human society, the Angel of Peace still sits at our gates. Our children sleep secure in quiet and prosperous homes, far from the din of battle which is to decide their destiny. Let us thank Him also, that He has not deserted our beloved country in the day of her sorrowful calamity. Already His bow of promise, radiant with celestial omens of victory, spans the tempest which darkens the land. He has united our hearts and arrayed the invincible legions of our people in defense of good government and free institutions. By the sacrifice of the blood of our heroes, He has consecrated anew the cause of country and liberty in the affections of our children and in the sympathies and aspirations of the civilized and Christian world. With the incense of thank-offering, let prayers go up from every alter, that God may throw the shield of His mercy around the brave soldiers who have gone from our midst to do battle for the right, that this wicked rebellion may terminate in the triumph of the just authority of the laws, and in the re-establishment of civil order and peace throughout a re-united and prosperous country, to the glory and honor of His name.”Alexander Ramsey, Governor, State of Minnesota.
