Terrorist attack on French magazine Charlie Hebdo? This horrific outcome seems to be the direction the United States is headed when Communist terrorists are able to dictate to universities what they can or cannot do in a “free society.”

Ann Coulter and “a dark day for free speech in America!”

SAN JOSE, CA, — Ann Coulter will not deliver her speech at the “University” of California at Berkeley today. Just the threat of violent attacks upon the scheduled Coulter speech at UC Berkeley was enough to inhibit the First Amendment rights of Coulter and the student group that had arranged the event. Not an actual attack, but just the threat, obliterated free speech at UC Berkeley, the former home of the “free speech movement.” It is an historic irony that the concept of free speech no longer exists at the university which epitomized such freedom in the 1960s. The reign of terror has begun. The reign of intolerance and lack of respect for the opinions of others who may express thought different from one’s own indoctrination has begun. Ann Coulter announced that she cancelled her speech after learning that the student group that had originally sponsored her event had withdrawn their support for it. In an email to Reuters, Coulter wrote that “there will be no speech… I looked over my shoulder and my allies had joined the other team.” Apparently, one of the sponsoring groups, Young America’s Foundation, withdrew its support for the event, which was originally scheduled to occur at the university’s Sproul Plaza, when the group discovered the university would not provide legitimate protection from any violent protesters who opposed Coulter.
“I’m very sad about Berkeley’s cancellation, but my sadness is greater than that. It is a dark day for free speech in America,” Coulter tweeted the other day. One natural question that could be raised by intelligent readers would be why the university would not be willing to provide some sensible level of legitimate security, if the freedom of all speech mattered. In reality, from various reports, when representatives from YAF made arrangements to schedule Coulter’s speech, university officials attempted to deny granting permission due to the violence that erupted when Libertarian Milo Yiannopoulos was set to give a speech this past February. Yet, there seems to be a level of discomfort in the ivory towers of academia with regard to the content of the messages brought by conservative thinkers or activists. Intolerance of ideas --- at a university? This is all the more reason to suspect that the halls of higher education are not about liberal arts education, but “lop-sided, one-sided indoctrination. While many conservative commentators like to insult the young people as “snowflakes” or “wimps” whining for their “safe space zones,” the truth is that parents continue to send their children to such places under the illusion that their kids are going to get a good education, when their kids are being indoctrinated by slick and skillful professors of propaganda on the Left, who have little regard for most freedoms that the Founding Fathers bequeathed to posterity. Additionally, the university officials have either turned a blind eye to this anemic “education,” or they have promoted it. Parents should think more than twice about financial support for their sons or daughters in these institutions of lower learning like those of such disrepute within the UC system. When extremely intelligent individuals such as David Horowitz or Charles Murray or Ben Carson are denied the ability to voice their viewpoints in a public environment of a college or university, the actions demonstrate a serious lack of commitment to enhance or even support the free exchange of ideas. This speaks loudly of the capability of alleged “centers of learning” as they compete within the free marketplace of ideas. Such centers of “higher” education and like facilities should be known for a fearless defense of the free exchange of ideas from any source or value orientation within the legal limits for freedom of speech.

Was it so long ago that the world was shocked and many outraged by the terrorist attack on the offices of French magazine Charlie Hebdo?

Especially in the U.S., colleges and universities are legally obliged to protect the First Amendment freedoms, and when considerations of safety or security are the excuse for limiting or even curtailing the freedom of speech, the institution should be scrutinized as to its legal foundation in light of the Constitution. Even more importantly, a university in such a serious consideration of the free exchange of ideas should be scrutinized as to its useful function within society, when such a blatant disrespect and disregard for the protection of free speech has been exhibited. From elementary school classrooms to college campuses decorum needs to be maintained within the education environment, and if a university cannot ensure freedom of speech, it loses genuine credibility as a center of learning. Willing or unwilling compliance with the mere threats of violence to curtail free speech is a very dangerous capitulation to would-be terrorists. And the very idea of building a wall across the southern border between the U.S. and Mexico to protect citizens from terrorism in this nation is ridiculous because home-grown Communist terrorists are already within our cities, and can apparently dictate from the street how the nation is to function. Was it so long ago that the world was shocked and many outraged by the terrorist attack on the offices of French magazine Charlie Hebdo? This horrific outcome seems to be the direction in which the people in the United States are headed when Communist terrorists are able to dictate to university officials what they can or cannot do in a “free society.”
