Lori Lightfoot, the Mayor that reigns over today’s version of the OK Corral, took time out from emboldening criminals to try and recruit students for her campaign. Since Lightfoot is the Mayor/Warden of Chicago, she oversees schools in the city. That power enables her to appoint the superintendent and board of education members. Apparently, this inferred power over the schools motivated Lightfoot to hatch an underhanded plan that would utilize students to aid her campaign.

Her Deputy Campaign Manager sent an email, through government email channels, to the public-school teachers asking them to recruit students to volunteer for Lightfoot’s campaign. The effort would be considered an “externship” and the student would earn extra class credit. “We’re simply looking for enthusiastic, curious and hardworking young people eager to help Mayor Lightfoot win this spring.” Nice try spin master. This is a desperate attempt by a slimy politician to utilize the innocent nature of children as persuasion to vote for her. For the kids, it’s an easy way to get extra credit, which their parents will view as a nice gesture. Will Fletcher, who is the Inspector General of Chicago Public Schools, is investigating and his office released this statement:
“Our office opened an investigation into this matter and we are currently gathering information to determine which, if any, policies have been violated."
Let’s hope it’s a real investigation with real consequences if legal wrongdoing is confirmed and not just lip service to appease her opponents. Speaking of her opponents, Lightfoot has 8 people challenging her and several of them wasted no time condemning her for these actions. Paul Vallas, a former Superintendent of Chicago Schools, expressed concerns over whether or not someone may have shared government email lists with a political entity. Vallas Stated:
“I cannot believe CPS did this without some kind of clear message from City Hall.”
Sophia King, a Chicago Alderman, and another challenger to Lightfoot said:
"I really think this is egregious, and if she had anything to do with this she should step down."
Lightfoot’s campaign released this statement regarding the investigation:
“If there is a Board of Ethics inquiry, we will address it at that time. We are committed to running an ethical, transparent campaign, and will continue to do so in the weeks and months ahead."
Too late for that.
