Bernie Sanders in 1985: Fidel Castro is pretty awesome, you know

The video you’re about to see is more than 30 years old, and it’s only fair to Bernie Sanders that we point that out. But it’s also fair to ask: What about Bernie Sanders’s views has changed in 30 years? Not much that we can see. It was pretty standard left-wing boilerplate back then to dismiss any problems people had with socialist governments abroad, especially if opposing said governments was a priority of the Reagan Administration. You might recall that in the 1980s, the Reagan Administration gave massive support to the contras fighting the communist Sandinista regime in Nicaragua, over much derision from Democrats. And as for Fidel Castro’s Cuba, they were strategically and economically aligned with the Soviet Union – and it had only been 24 years since the Cuban Missile Crisis.

But your average wild-eyed socialist didn’t see the problem, and Bernie Sanders was a perfect example of it even then: (Scroll down for video) The bit about Castro “educating the kids” is quite the load of crap. Castro back then was blocking all foreign radio signals so the only information the Cuban people could get was sanitized by the Castro regime. That’s not “educating,” Bernie. That’s mind control. He was wrong about Nicaragua too. The pressure from the contras forced the Sandinistas to schedule an election in 1990, and the Nicaraguan people took the opportunity to oust Daniel Ortega and his little band of communist thugs. Tragically, and perhaps symbolic of where the world has gone since then, Ortega has returned to power and is once again president of a once-again socialist Nicaragua. It’s really something to see people who are freaking out about Donald Trump, because they think he’s a fascist, willing to support a guy like Bernie Sanders who has a history of defending despots like Fidel Castro. A lot of Sanders’s young supporters object to the argument that they’re willing to support a socialist because they’re too young to remember the destructive history of socialism. They say they do know the history, but they see different things in socialism. Yeah. Things that don’t exist. Things that are impossible. You simply can’t attack the people who create wealth in society without imposing misery on everyone. Young socialists who are “feeling the Bern” have bought the idea that America’s economic system is “rigged” in favor of the 1 percent and that there’s no way they will ever be able to access opportunity without the government stepping in and making everything fair. That is the biggest bunch of crap I’ve ever heard, but that’s what they get from their teachers and from the celebrity/media personalities they pay attention, so that’s what they think. Let a person who’s had success in business try to teach them something about what it takes to succeed, apparently they’re not too interested. I’ve seen more than a few Republicans who announced this week that they voted for Sanders because they’re “tired of all the hate” and all that sort of thing. What that tells me is that they have no understanding of the beliefs of the man they just voted for, and what they’re really all about. That doesn’t mean Bernie Sanders himself is ambitions of being a despot, but how can you listen to a guy who’s constantly railing against anyone successful and tell me you voted for him as a protest against hate? His supporters have to stop being so naïve. Socialism is an evil system that breeds nothing but misery, and Bernie Sanders has been in denial about that since way back in the day when most people understood it very well – as the above video demonstrates all too clearly.
