Blackouts

How widespread, now, are momentary blackouts – a phenomenon seldom before experienced in American homes (except during storms)?

Over the last couple months or so, but especially in the last few weeks, I’ve been noticing half-second brownouts. Lights dim, then come back to normal. Mostly it’s in the evening hours – though of course, since we’re relying on fewer lights in the daylight … who knows? Last night, in the 11pm hour, I noticed a half-second blackout that was long enough and deep enough that my furnace even stopped & restarted. The moment was definable enough to convince me that I wasn’t merely hallucinating the other, less deep, brownouts. Last night’s event reminded me of being on missile crew, down in the ICBM control capsules, and listening to the motor-generator switching from primary power to battery power during a topside storm or high wind event – the MG switchover had a loud “clunk” sound and a split-second dimming of lights. Last night was a momentary darkening of all lights with a ‘chunk’ sound from the furnace room, then the furnace fan started back up as the lights turned back on. I was a bit concerned about the effect on my computer, which was on, but it seems OK. But last night, and during all preceding momentary brownouts, there’s been no apparent weather cause – clear skies or partly cloudy, no rain nor wind. The power simply flickers for no apparent reason. (And in my neighborhood, all utility lines are buried for extra protection against the elements.) Am I the only one noticing half-second blackouts, mostly in the evenings in these last several weeks, where before our electricity was consistent?
