Bangladesh government withdrew police protection from my residence suddenly on May 5, 2008. I made numerous requests to them to restore the protection. But, it was never done. My brother Dr. Richard L Benkin also made similar requests, but in vain. This afternoon, an official with Uttara Police Station [where my residence is located] told me on condition of anonymity that the police protection was withdrawn following a high-level instruction. I was also assured by several high officials that the police protection will be back. But it hasn't returned!

Anti Islamist forces are in potential danger in Bangladesh as Islamist militancy groups are gaining strength in this country almost every day. My office was bombed in July 2006 by a group of Islamists and despite the fact of lodging formal case, there had neither been investigation nor did the police ever arrested the culprit. As members of Rapid Action Battalion [RAB] intruded into my office on March 18, 2008 and looted valuables as well abducted me at gun point, there is neither any action from the government against those culprits nor the government or RAB ever returned the looted goods. Please take initiatives in writing to Bangladeshi government to immediate restore police protection, Return the goods which were looted from my office by RAB men on March 18, Drop the false charges [my next court date in May 27], Stop all forms of harrassment techniques. Please act now by writing to Bangladeshi officials, Members of the US Congress, Members of the US Senate, The State Department OR US Embassy in Dhaka.
