Carlos 'Anthony Weiner' Danger sentenced to 21 months in federal prison - 3 years supervised release

I'll be honest. I thought he'd skate with nothing more than a slap on the wrist. We can dicker over how long we think the sentence ought to be - and if you're the parent of a teenage girl I'm willing to bet you don't think this is enough - but the fact that he's going away at all is kind of surprising. Weiner faces almost two years in a teenage-girl free environment, and an additional 3 years of supervised release.
Former Rep. Anthony Weiner was sentenced Monday to 21 months in prison for sexting with a minor. In addition to the prison term, Weiner also was sentenced to three years of supervised release. "This is a serious crime that deserves serious punishment," Judge Denise Cote of the Southern District of New York said. In May, Weiner, 53, pleaded guilty to one charge of transferring obscene material to a minor in federal court in Manhattan. The charges stem from communications that the former congressman had with a 15-year-old girl on social media sites between January and March 2016. Weiner is the estranged husband of Huma Abedin, Hillary Clinton's former adviser. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Prosecutors recommended a sentence of 21 to 27 months in jail, arguing Weiner's pattern of behavior "suggests a dangerous level of denial and lack of self-control warranting a meaningful incarceratory sentence." Defense attorneys asked that Weiner receive probation.

So, he lands on the flaccid end of what prosecutors wanted, but his sentence is still within their request. This comes just a couple of weeks after Weiner lawyers asked the judge for leniency, claiming that Weiner's 15-year-old victim had baited the now-disgraced Representative as part of (get this) a plan to influence the election. Yes, really. Apparently, it's not just the Russians who hoped to defeat Hillary.
Lawyers for disgraced former New York congressman Anthony Weiner (WEE’-nur) say a 15-year-old North Carolina girl he sexted had hoped to influence the presidential election. They say she told government investigators that had been a goal from the outset when she reached out to the Democrat. The lawyers say in a presentence submission filed Wednesday to a federal court judge Weiner rebuffed the girl’s repeated requests before exchanging sexually explicit messages with her. They say the girl documented their interactions from the outset before selling her story to a British tabloid for $30,000 in September 2016.

The reason I'm surprised by all of this is that, in the old days, a "friend of Bill" would have made a few phone calls and Weiner would have enojyed a full release. Yes, Hillary probably detests the guy, and blames him for her loss, but the Clinton cabal would still have covered for him and dealt with him privately. After all, the Clintons know a thing or two about how much damage a rogue Weiner can cause. Call it the waning power of the Clinton machine, but it's good to see.
