Defining the God we pray to

When Americans pray, we pray to the God who reigns in America. We believe He is the one true God. According to the Bible and the Nicene Creed, He is a Triune God: Jehovah, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost. And He is the God of the Hebrew Shema: “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One.” That divine nature is a mystery to our minds.

Christopher Columbus claimed that the Holy Spirit guided his voyage here. According to the Mayflower Compact, the Pilgrim Separatists left England and Holland to come here in order to “advance the Christian faith.” This God only is the source of our freedom, according to the Declaration of Independence. He is the Creator who endows freedom as an inalienable right. Our founders knew this God, and He is the one God who is honored in our Bill of Rights and Constitution. This God commands us to have “no other gods before Me,” and so there are no other gods in our founding documents. This God’s name and the influence of his laws are inscribed into the state charters and constitutions of all 50 states. There is no state in which we do not see cities that reference him – from Corpus Christi, San Francisco, Bethel, and Las Cruces, to Providence, Salem, Bethlehem and Philadelphia – over 1,000 names. Even 50th state Hawaii’s island of Molokai was a Catholic leper colony. It was managed by Father Damien, who was later canonized. There is no state without a college, or hospital, or church, or TV network, or fish symbol on a minivan that is not dedicated to Him. Our most cherished and fun holidays acknowledge his birth, his resurrection, and thanksgiving. Our Presidents are sworn in with their hands on the Bible. Our athletes thank him publicly when they score a touchdown.  In a word, the United States is great, because we exist in His greatness.

Other than personal revelation, or a personal relationship with this God, we know His character by the testimony of the prophets, and by the Old and New Testament names that describe him.

He is: Jesus, The Christ, the Messiah, The Beautiful Savior, The Anointed One. He is the Sacrificial Lamb of God. He is the Word, by Whom all things were made. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, the Mighty One, Counselor, Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. He is Emmanuel, God with us. He is the Way, the Truth, the Life. He is the Bread of Life, The Bridegroom, The Good Shepherd [Jehovah-Rohi], The Light of the World, The Balm in Gilead. He is the Great Physician and Healer [Jehovah-Rapha].He is Mary Magdalene’s Rabboni. He is The Man of Sorrows, and long suffering. He is a Jealous God, and He is the God Who goes to prepare a place for us in Heaven. He is the Second Adam. He is Without Sin. He cannot lie.

He is Yahweh- Jehovah, the God who saves. The Jews originally thought pronouncing the tetragrammatron, YHVH, would crack the universe. He is Elohim [a name showing His plural nature] and El-Shaddai, God Almighty. He is a Mighty Fortress. He is Adonai, the Lord.  He vouchsafed the words of Moses saying, “Tell them ‘I AM’ sent you.” He is God our Provider [Jehovah-Jireh], and God our Righteousness [Jehovah-Tsidkenu]. He will Judge all men with righteous judgment. He is Abba, meaning daddy. He is the Comforter. He spake by the prophets. He is the Alpha and Omega, the same yesterday, today and forever.  He is not politically correct. He cannot lie. He is holy. He will never leave us or forsake us, and he says, “Lo I am with you always, even to the end of the Age.”

As we pray for forgiveness, and wisdom, for the restoration of our country, for deluded eyes to be opened, and for the blessings of liberty to continue, we can meditate on the character of this God.
