Dust Off the Death Panels

When Obamacare was being debated in the early months of the Obama administration, one of the most criticized features was the “death panel.” This term was employed by Sarah Palin and other conservatives to describe the appointed bureaucrats who would decide how to allocate precious health care resources based on the severity of the illness, the life expectancy of the patient, and the cost of the treatment. Since the members of the death panels would not be emotionally involved in these cases, they would be able to make objective calculations about how much and what kind of treatment would be available, and when to withhold treatment and allow a patient to die. A death panel is needed now, and ObamaCare is the patient.

The flaws in ObamaCare were evident from the beginning–it was tremendously complex, it would cause widespread disruption in one sixth of the American economy, and it would make the government the arbiter of health care. Additionally, critics charged that millions would lose their current insurance, doctors would opt out of the plan, and the cost of medical insurance would skyrocket. Although denied by the president and Democrat leaders, this has proved to be true. These defects could be classified as pre-existing conditions which, as we all know, ObamaCare dictates must be covered. Therefore, the Obamacare patient would fall under the authority of ObamaCare. For years, we were assured that these pre-existing conditions would be treated, could be controlled, and would not compromise the patient. However, recent prognoses indicate that these pre-existing conditions have all worsened. Millions are losing the policies that they have chosen and depended upon, the costs to others who are still covered have spiraled upward, and those who wish to avail themselves of ObamaCare’s promised benefits have been blocked by a dysfunctional web site. Additionally, the disease that has spread through ObamaCare is contagious. It has separated patients from their doctors, raised costs for employers who wish to extend health care insurance to their employees, and made it desirable for other employers to turn full time employees into part timers. The disease threatens not just individuals but the entire American economy. In the case of the ObamaCare patient, the death panel is not made up of faceless appointed bureaucrats. It consists of the American electorate. It is up to us to vote and tell our representatives how we feel about this failing patient known as ObamaCare. At this point, the patient is obviously declining by the day, with no prospect of recovery. It is pointless to spend more precious resources on trying to reverse an incurable disease. For the good of all, the plug should be pulled on ObamaCare, exactly as ObamaCare mandates. Then Americans and the American economy can finally begin to heal.
