Ontario's countless political scandals

Enough Scandal. Grand Juries Could Be the Solution

(TORONTO) - "Resurrecting Grand Juries could be the solution to ending Ontario's countless political scandals," said Randy Hillier, MPP for Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington, after introducing a Bill to bring Grand Juries back to Ontario. Grand Juries would empower the citizens of Ontario to investigate public institutions regardless of the government's willingness to call a judicial inquiry.

"In the last two years alone, the people of this province have seen scandals with the cancellation of the gas plants in Oakville and Mississauga, with the ORNGE air ambulance service and with the executive of the Pan-Am Games,” Hillier remarked. “Ontario's Liberal Government has been unwilling to call a judicial inquiry; Grand Juries give the people of this province oversight of public institutions regardless of what the government wants." The Act would create Grand Juries in each of Ontario's counties and districts and task them with the responsibility of investigating public institutions such as agencies, boards and commissions. Instead of being reliant on the government of the day to embarrass itself and call a judicial inquiry , Grand Juries would have the standing right to produce reports for the Legislature, just like a judicial inquiry could. "The Liberal Government has failed to deal with any of their scandals. The people of Ontario demand more answers. Grand Juries would bring back the accountability in government people expect.”
