Chiado Restaurant located at 864 College Street is a certain must try if you’re looking to experience authentic ‘fine dining’ Portuguese cuisine. It has been a landmark in the neighbourhood since August 1990. The Cooks dined at Chiado where a tasting menu was prepared that would more than satisfy a discerning palate… we were not disappointed. The warm décor is felt in the ‘Old World Traditional’ dining room off the main entrance leading into a ‘Contemporary’, more modern section behind the bar. Owner Albino Silva greets his guests at the door which begins their dining experience with hospitality and attention to detail. Excellent and personable wait staff take over – they are very friendly and knowledgeable with both the menu and the wide variety of wines available. Chiado prides itself on the freshest of ingredients. The Cooks highly recommend the fresh fish of the day – flown in daily directly from the Azores, expertly prepared, and artfully presented. The fresh fish selections are displayed to the guests on a large platter. Our waiter described each one – the texture, the flavour, the region they are native to and how they are served… it was hard to choose only one. We began out tasting menu with Tuna Tartare, mixed with mango, onion, mango puree. Absolutely delightful. Light and full of flavour, it was colourful, well presented, a perfect start that was most enjoyed. A seafood appetizer followed. Both a grilled squid with coriander, lemon, garlic and olive oil over grilled pineapple, along with a marinated grilled sardine. This was arranged over an onion and tomatoe confeit - drizzled in a lemon parsley olive oil. This mixture of flavours is typical of Portugal, and was finished with a perfect crisp white wine, recommended by our host. Our fish entre was two pieces of fresh fish prepared with piri piri sauce and vegetables. We were next served our all time favorite - rack of lamb on risotto of seasonal vegetables – which was mushrooms, served sitting in a puddle of wine rosemary sauce. A wonderful cooked main complemented by another perfectly matched red wine. Chiado has a selection of exquisite desserts – save room as they are not to be missed. We sampled, Crème Brule, poached pears baked with mascarpone cheese, and a selection of cheese. Along with the extensive wine cellar, Chiado also has an impressive Port menu. A perfect end to a perfect meal. Chiado offers outstanding service, great atmosphere – ideal for a business luncheon, a romantic dinner or private group events. Private dining is available upstairs and in the basement wine cellar for elegant private functions for smaller groups of 15 – 24 guests. The main floor rooms provide dining for approx. 120. Dinner for two before wine about $170.00. Chiado is open for lunch Monday to Friday from 12 to 2:30 and dinner Monday to Sunday from 5 to 10 Reservations are preferred 864 College Street West 416-538-1910 chiadorestaurant.com See you there; tell them The Cooks sent you…
