Fiat Chrysler pumps $1 billion, 2000 jobs, into Michigan and Ohio

It feels like, every few days since November 8th, we get another happy story about the U.S. business outlook. Whether it's Carrier sticking around, Ford scrapping it's Mexico plant, or SoftBank creating jobs for 50,000 Americans, it seems we're just being inundated with good news. Now, we have some more. Fiat Chrysler will be investing a billion dollars in Michigan and Ohio, creating 2,000 jobs in the process. I'm not sure what happened on November 8th, but it sure looks like it's working out.
As CNBC reports:
FCA, the U.S. arm of automaker Fiat-Chrysler, announced on Sunday that it would invest a total $1 billion in plants in Michigan and Ohio, which will add 2000 new jobs in the United States. The announcement, in what the company said was the second phase of a plan it first made public a year ago, came days after Ford Motor Company decided to scrap a plan to build a facility in Mexico, instead opting to invest in a plant in Michigan. Ford's CEO cited demand, rather than the policies of President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to impose a "border tax" on companies that send jobs abroad. "Consistent and combined with previously announced investments, FCA US is further demonstrating its commitment to strengthening its U.S. manufacturing base, and aligning U.S. capacity to extend the Jeep product lineup," FCA said.

...The move "is a continuation of the efforts already underway to increase production capacity in the U.S.on trucks and SUVs to match demand," the company said, adding that it would help solidify the U.S. as "a global manufacturing hub" for its flagship brands.
"Progressives" will no doubt argue that this is all just part of an ongoing plan to beef up their U.S. manufacturing capabilities. They were always going to do this. Nothing has changed. The election had nothing to do with it. In fact, if anything, you should probably thank Barack Obama. But, does anyone really buy that? It certainly feels like there's been a shift and, in purely political terms, "feel" is usually more important than "real." It also feels like this isn't the end. Several major companies continue to signal a new direction in terms of U.S manufacturing and investment. Heck, even Apple is exploring U.S. manufacturing for iPhones. Whether coporations are worried about President-Elect Trump enacting future penalties, or they're anticipating his promised corporate tax cuts, it seems clear that we've turned a corner. How big the change will be, and how long it will last, remains to be seen. For now, let's just be happy that things are moving in the right direction. ...And enjoy the fact that Headlines like this must be driving the left absolutely nuts.
