Health care: Get back in there and fix this mess

President Trump had a plan all along in case Republicans failed to repeal and replace ObamaCare. And boy did they fail. I suspected we might be going in this direction as soon as the Senate announced its intention to push aside the House-passed American Health Care Act and rewrite the bill. That spelled disaster all along, because you’ve got too many RINOs in the Senate who don’t really want free-market health care. Susan Collins appears to be the biggest problem of all the RINOs. She insists that ObamaCare is “so interwoven” into the fabric of America that you can’t repeal it without a replacement, but she refuses to support any of the replacements.

Susan Collins is not really a Republican. She has an R next to her name, but she’s a Democrat

Susan Collins is not really a Republican. She has an R next to her name, but she’s a Democrat. When we go RINO hunting in primary elections over the course of the next few years, Susan Collins will be one of our biggest targets. It’s frustrating that she’s not up for re-election until 2020, but that’s OK. We won’t forget. In the meantime, though, Senate Republicans have to face the truth about the seriousness of this failure. President Trump met with them on Wednesday and told them he refuses to accept that a replacement bill is impossible, and expects them to get back in there and work something out before they head off on any sort of summer vacation. He is correct when he says that they were not that far away from a deal, but talks broke down over the remaining issues and Mitch McConnell either decided it would be too much work to bridge the gap, or he decided he had the perfect excuse to give up because that’s what he really wanted to do all along. A lot of liberals have accused Republicans of not being serious when they voted to repeal ObamaCare during the Obama presidency. They said the votes were pointless because they knew Obama would veto the bills. What President Trump told Republicans on Wednesday is that, if they don’t repeal ObamaCare now when he’s ready to sign the repeal, then that charge was correct all along. They never were serious. They did it strictly as a campaign talking point, knowing they would never have to live with the consequences of their action.

It’s your job to do it. If it’s hard, too damn bad

Democrats are responsible for the consequences of ObamaCare. They’re the ones who passed it. But if Republicans fail now when they had the chance to repeal it, then they share in that responsibility. Solving this problem is their job, not because they caused it but because they ran for the office that comes with that responsibility. It’s not OK for them to throw up their hands and say, oh well, sorry, we tried, it was too hard. No. It’s your job to do it. If it’s hard, too damn bad. Get back in there and do it, and don’t stop working on it until you’ve got it done. Or admit that you never intended to all along, and that your whole repeal-and-replace routine was a total fraud. Just like you.
