And the GOP response is....?

Here we go again: Schumer promises to obstruct Trump's FBI appointment

Let's get one thing out of the way. Chuck Schumer is a vile, duplicitous, self-aggrandizing, snake who doesn't give a rat's rear about the country or the ideals he claims to support. A quick look at his career reveals a textbook example of the two-faced congressional lifer that we've all come to loathe. He exists not to serve his state, his voters, or his nation. He exists to serve and perpetuate the myth of Chuck Schumer's greatness - nothing more. None of that should come as a surprise to anyone. In fact, I only mention it so that when I turn my anger toward the GOP, you'll understand I'm aware Schumer is the real issue. That said, the Republicans are, as usual, driving me nuts.

DNC talking point regurgitators at CNN

Chuck Schumer is, once again, promising non-stop obstruction. He's done that on a regular basis since Hillary went down in flames last November. This time, the threat comes to us via the DNC talking point regurgitators at CNN:
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday that the Senate should refuse to confirm a new FBI director until the Department of Justice appoints a special counsel to lead a probe into allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. "I think there are a lot of Democrats who feel that way," Schumer said on CNN's "State of the Union." "We'll have to discuss it as a caucus, but I would support that move." Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee, proposed the idea after President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey last week.
Here's the thing. I may despise Schumer, but I can at least respect this one thing: He's fighting, and his barely-coherent base loves it. He's out there, every day, beating the left-wing drum, promising to wage war against Trump, and pursuing a very public agenda of non-stop obstruction. Sure, he's doing it to further his own position, but at least he's doing it.

So, where is the Republican effort to counter this attack?

So, where is the Republican effort to counter this attack? As far as I can tell, there isn't one. The silence from the right side of the aisle is deafening. During the Obama years, any meager resistance the GOP managed to offer was met with an army of leftists attacking them as the "party of no." Obama got pretty much everything he wanted, but Dems still did a stellar job of selling the idea that Republicans were blocking everything. Those "dastardly conservatives were standing in the way of what the voters wanted," and the left went to war. Now, roles are reversed. Democrats are trying to stand in the way of everything GOP voters demanded and the party is either silent or, worse, capitulating. There are those who will argue that none of this matters. "Narrative," they'll claim, "isn't important." As long as Republicans are in power, they'll argue that the left's messaging is irrelevant. However, if the budget "deal" is what we're going to get from being "in power," I'd argue it's a moot point. Power is meaningless if you're not willing to wield it effectively. ...More to the point, politics is a war of attrition. The messaging may not matter now but, as the past teaches us, eventually it will. No one has ever managed to withstand the kind of incessant barrage that's currently being directed at Trump without firing back. George W. Bush tried to take the high road, and eventually the negative press consumed his administration.

It's sink or swim for the Republicans

If the GOP doesn't start sticking up for itself, my instinct is that Trump will suffer a similar fate. If Republicans in congress think that the damage will stop at the White House, they're sorely mistaken. This is the GOP's last chance. If they can't succeed now, when they have both chambers and the presidency, their supporters will turn on them and it will be a death blow for the party. It's sink or swim for the Republicans. Sadly, they seem to be content treading water until they drown.
