Herman Cain, Pro Football and Racism

Many voices in the mainstream media along with several liberal Democrat political pundits have posited that conservatives and Republicans dislike President Obama because they are racists, and actually support Herman Cain in an effort to hide that racism.
Nothing could be further from the truth. But because it’s almost impossible for any one person or group to prove they are not racist after openly and continually being accused of it, maybe some simple observations in a large mixed group setting would be enlightening. Sitting in Bank of America Stadium several weeks ago with about 70 thousand other people watching the Carolina Panthers beat the Washington Redskins; I took a random survey of fans wearing both Carolina and Washington jerseys. With my trusty binoculars, I counted exactly one hundred jersey clad fans – fifty white adults and fifty black adults; from the nose-bleed section to the 50 yard line field level seats. Of each set of fifty fans, I chose twenty five Carolina fans and twenty five Washington fans.

Taking note of the jersey numbers they were wearing and matching it to the player of that team, I came up with an astounding result. All fifty adult Washington fans I spotted were wearing jerseys with the numbers of black players, and all fifty Carolina fans were wearing jerseys with the numbers of black players as well. Following the absurd logic of the mainstream media and prominent liberal Democrat political pundits, were those white pro football fans wearing the jerseys of black players simply to hide their racism? After crunching the numbers of my unscientific survey and not finding any jerseys of white players and since the Panthers had the game in the bag, I decided to continue my random survey. This time I was looking for any jerseys that represented white players. Looking and looking among the 70 thousand fans for the last eight minutes of the game and as I exited the stadium, all the way to my car, I only came across only three jerseys of white players; Joe Theismann and Chris Cooley of Washington and Jake Delhomme of Carolina. What’s interesting about these results is that smack dab in the middle of the south, white people are willing to show public support of their team by wearing the jerseys of black players. As a pro football fan for more than fifty years, I can tell you without a doubt; fans don’t care what race the players are on their favorite teams, they support the whole team; and whether they wear the jersey of a black player or white player, it’s simply an outward expression of their respect for that player’s athletic ability and their loyal support for the team, not a cover-up of their racism. The same holds true in politics; conservatives and Republicans support specific candidates on their favorite team for their political experience, records and positions. Some wear Herman Cain jerseys, some wear Mitt Romney jerseys, while others wear the jerseys of the candidates they happen to like. Their matter of preference has nothing to do with the person’s race, and everything to do with supporting the team.
