Hillary’s really big boo-boo

A week ago, I had the pleasure of attending a seminar with economist Alan Beaulieu of the Institute for Trend Research. Beaulieu is one of the few economists who over a year ago predicted that the housing bubble would burst and bring about a deep recession, a prediction that has more than come true. His talk included comment on Barak Obama’s economic stimulus package, which he predicted would cause a lot more problems than it would solve. Beaulieu also lamented the fact that Hillary Clinton didn’t win her party’s nomination, because he said that Hillary is a known quantity and one could reasonably predict what her actions might be.

This gave me cause to wonder about why Mrs. Clinton ever agreed to become a part of the Obama administration, given the president’s extreme lack of experience and his radical plans. Did it never occur to her that Obama could like Jimmy Carter bite the dust after one term, which would effectively end any hopes that Hillary might have of someday achieving the Oval Office? Given that the Obama administration hasn’t exactly started off on the right foot with scandal after scandal plaguing the president’s cabinet choices as well as his chief of staff, and given that his stimulus package is almost universally seen as a massive pork bill that will do precious little to stimulate the economy, the chances of Mr. Obama being in the White House four years from now are slim, his current popularity notwithstanding. It’s even possible that the Democrats themselves will wind up throwing Obama under the bus in 2012 by nominating another Democrat to run for president. If that happens, it is a sure bet that Hillary Clinton will not be that Democrat, since she has been one of the key members of the Obama cabinet. Hillary’s only chance of ever becoming president (barring the sudden and simultaneous demise of Barak Obama, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and Robert “sheets” Byrd) evaporated with her acquiescence to serve as Secretary of State. Had she decided to sit out the next four years, fatten her war chest and then challenge the Messiah, she would likely have had as good a chance as any to succeed, as the expectations of Barak Obama are so high that he is bound to disappoint the majority of Americans. But as it stands she is stuck having to campaign for Obama in 2012 and by 2016 she will be too old to succeed. Just ask John McCain. It’s very uncharacteristic of Hillary to make a mistake of this magnitude, as she is nothing if not Machiavellian. You can bet that all these scenarios went through her mind prior to her deciding to join the Obama administration and one wonders if she knows something the rest of us don’t or if she just got some bad advice. Whichever the case, it’s likely to be Hillary Clinton’s biggest boo-boo ever and one she’ll likely rue for the remainder of her life.
