Hold the presses. It isn’t mental illness-it is arrogant liberalism

Once again Canada’s self-appointed media elites are justifying actions of terrorists. This latest attack in Canada-insignificant compared to the recent bombings in Brussels-was downplayed. It wasn’t terrorism-it was mental illness. Of course it was. The left wing British authors of the Euston Manifesto. After a Muslim man entered a Canadian Forces recruiting centre and attacked two soldiers, the editors of the Globe and Mail wrote, “If we become fixated on a pre-existing model of what the world should look like, we are more likely to shape acts of apparent randomness into the picture we expect to see.” So in their desire not to get attached to a pre-existing idea-that Muslims kill in the name of Allah, in the name of their culture and their teachings- they concluded he must be mentally ill. Despite what this man said when he attacked CANADIAN SOLDIERS.

From the Globe March 20, 2016. “A test of the ability to categorize a complex world came this week when a lone man allegedly walked into a Canadian Forces recruiting centre in Toronto and stabbed two soldiers while yelling, ‘Allah told me to come here and kill people.’ Held in connection with the incident is 27-year-old Ayanle Hassan Ali. Is this a case of terrorism? Or a random act of violence, possibly connected to mental illness?” The Globe and Mail editors did exactly what they warned their readers not to do; jump to a conclusion. They did not want to offend Muslims-they decided to offend the millions of us with mental illness. They want us to believe that mentally ill people do these things when in fact those of us with mental illness tend to harm ourselves-not others. Only a small number of people with severe mental illness like unmanaged schizophrenia have been known to harm others. So despite the fact it 27-year-old Ayanle Hassan Ali looked like a duck walked like a duck and quacked like a duck-he was a duck except to these self-appointed elites who decided to call him a turkey.

This is not the first time the media has tried to protect Muslims who kill in the name of their idea of God and instead impugn the mentally ill. CBC tried this after the shooting of Cpl. Nathan Cirillo by Michael Zehaf-Bibeau and the hit and run killing of Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent by Martin Couture-Rouleau. The powers that be at the CBC had sent out a note to on-air personalities to “to exercise restraint when they were covering the live breaking events.” And they did when it came to labelling the attacks terrorism but when it came to calling the terrorist mentally ill-no holds barred. From Mr. Cruickshank, the publisher of the Toronto star on CBC “Q”:

“Let me note that in every age craziness takes on a particular complexion. Just as people go to Jerusalem and they begin to believe they are Jesus Christ, and people go to Iceland and think they are Bjork, right? I mean that’s just the kind of thing that happens. And right now in a period when a kind of craziness leads to people thinking that they are terrorists supporting ISIL. If we take that seriously we are simply taking the nuttiness seriously. We are taking crazy seriously. And we’re telling people this is on all fours with an organized attempt to create terror amongst the population and subvert our society. This is not what is happening here.” And “one of the panelists thought that “the attack was carried out by someone who was not in his right mind.” (Italics are mine)

I am a muti-faith chaplain and during my residency at Toronto Hospital, I was called to visit patients on the psychiatric ward who believed they were Jesus or heard a voice telling them to kill in the name of God. My supervisor, Ken Jackson, had explained to us early on that when someone tells us that they have been told to kill in the name of God, that the voice they heard is not real. God does not tell us to kill in his name. At least the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Jesus. “Thou shalt not murder” is one of the Ten Commandments.

Those of us raised on the ethic of the Bible have been taught that murder is wrong and God does not tell us to kill in His name. But that is not true in Islam. In Islam it is permitted to kill in the name of Allah. It is permitted to kill the “other” the dhimmi-the Jew or Christian who will not convert. The late Egyptian scholar, Sayyid Qutb, a prolific, well-respected author whose works are quoted in the Muslim world and influenced members of the Muslim Brotherhood has written:

“The theory that our religion is a peaceful and loving religion is a wrong theory. The Holy war as it is known in Islamic jurisprudence is basically an offensive war, and it is the duty of all Muslims of every age…because our prophet Muhammad said that he is ordered by Allah to fight all people until they say ‘No God but Allah,’ and he is his messenger.”

There is a desire amongst the self-proclaimed elites in the media, academia and government to justify terrorism-from blowing up buses to murdering civilians at sports events and in cafés, or stalking Jews in Israel and attacking with knives and screw drivers or murder by car. They cannot, or will not, accept the possibility that these actions are committed by committed Muslims-committed to Sharia law and peace. Muslims say they want peace. Don’t our esteemed political leaders tell us that every time a Muslim murders in the name of Allah? The problem, though, is that the meaning of peace to Muslims is not the same as it is to us in the West. The ultimate meaning of Islamic peace is all of us living in Dar-al-Islam -- the house of submission. “Modern-day Islamic scholar, Ibrahim Sulaiman, says submission and peace can be very different concepts, even if a form of peace is often brought about through forcing others into submission. “Jihad is not inhumane, despite its necessary violence and bloodshed, its ultimate desire is peace which is protected and enhanced by the rule of law.” Armed responses are only permitted when all peaceful possibilities have failed. And once armed resistance begins it doesn’t stop “until the war lays down its burden” as Allah has mentioned in the Qur’an 47.” Why do we refuse to believe the intention of Muslims to spread Islam? Until the day comes when the DMS declares Islam a mental illness or mental disorder then it is incumbent upon the “Progressive” elites to call a duck a duck (a terrorist ) and not a turkey (mentally ill).
