Holy Week is Calling You

It is Holy Week, the week leading up to the Passion of Christ, but don’t expect any media to draw your attention to it. They’re too busy drawing public attention to the Herods and the Pilates of the current day and even seeming to relish in it. Mainstream media hero President Barack Obama is in Cuba where pictures of him and his smiling family members travel the Internet even though dozens of Cuban dissidents were arrested hours before his arrival.
For millions of those who have been its victim, there is little to smile about in Communist countries where brutal regimes keep their boots on the throats of the little people. In present-day Cuba the show must go own even as political prisoners are hidden away from the camera. In Roman times, choice entertainment came in showing the masses Christians being fed to ravening, deliberately starved lions. Today it’s eating hot dogs at baseball games while hundreds of ‘dissidents’ who disappeared from Cuban streets languish in unimaginably nightmarish jails.

While in Cuba Obama will spend an afternoon watching a baseball match between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cuban national side sitting with the Cuban President, Raul Castro. (ABC News) But even amidst the loudest cheering from public entertainment venues, the truth sometimes leaks out. Courageous Breta Soler, leader of the Ladies in White group, who refused to meet John Kerry when the embassy in Havana was reopened in August after he failed to invite dissidents to the official opening ceremony, said she believed Mr. Obama’s trip was misguided. “It’s not the moment,” she said. “He would be very welcome if things were getting better. But it’s not. Nothing has changed.” (Telegraph) Some 2000 years on from the first Holy Week, save for the huge advances in technology, life’s pretty much the same for life’s dissidents and truth tellers.

Jesus Christ was put to death on the Cross for telling the truth to the masses; that they (that’s us!) were only here on Earth as the participants of a fleeting journey that leads to an eternal life, attainable only by keeping God’s Commandments. It is a journey that goes far beyond who will be the next president, even though it is the same journey that is most woefully ignored. It’s Holy Week and while no media is calling your attention to it, our Savior is calling to you to walk along the way with Him to Calvary. He’s already done the heavy lifting and asks only for you to remember it. If you can’t be in church to say the Stations of the Cross this Friday, you can offer this ‘Prayer to Jesus Christ Crucified’:
‘Look down upon me, O good and sweetest Jesus, while before your face I humbly kneel. Most fervently I pray and beg you to fix deep within my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope, and charity, true sorrow for my sins, and a firm purpose of amendment. With deep affection and sorrow I contemplate your five wounds. I have before my eyes, O good Jesus, what David the prophet spoke of you, as though you were saying it yourself: “They have pierced my hands and my feet, they have numbered all my bones”. (Ps 21:17).
