Iran accepts UN resolution

Part 17 - JULY 19 1988 'Iran should now attract those countries who could become friends instead of alienating them, as it had done in the past.' Iranian military chief Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani Security Council Resolution 598, which Iran said today it had accepted, was adopted on July 20, 1987, as part of diplomatic efforts to end the war between Iran and Iraq. The text of the resolution is attached below.

Rafsanjani said the shooting down of the Airbus had prompted a major review of Iran's war policy.

Letter to the UN

'As you are well aware, the fire of the war which was started by the Iraqi regime on 22 September, 1980 through an aggression against the territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran has now gained unprecedented dimensions, bringing other countries into the war and even engulfing innocent civilians.   The killing of 290 innocent human beings, caused by the shooting down of an Airbus aircraft of the Islamic Republic of Iran by one of American warships in the Persian Gulf is a clear manifestation of this contention.'

Back to the present

The defense for Abdelbasset al Megrahi claims an identity parade line-up was unfair because of the way photos were shown to potential witnesses. Margaret Scott QC is seeking the expert opinion of UC Berkeley Professor Steve Clark, who specializes on identification procedures. However, Scott is currently denied access to these photos.   'It is unprecedented that I should have to ask judges to order the handover of the original photos,' Scott said.   In fact, the judgment (§ 69) recognizes that Gauci never positively identified Megrahi. On February 15 1991, Gauci was shown 12 photos, among them a picture of Megrahi's 1986 passport.   'Number 8 [The photo of Megrahi] is similar to the man who bought the clothing. The hair is perhaps a bit long. The eyebrows are the same. The nose is the same. And his chin and shape of face are the same. The man in the photograph number 8 is in my opinion in his 30 years.'   'He would perhaps have to look about 10 years, or more, older and he would look like the man who bought the clothes. It's been a long time now, and I can only say that this photograph 8 resembles the man who bought the clothing, but it is younger,' Gauci said.     NOTES AND REFERENCES     Basis for an End to Persian Gulf Fighting: Security Council Resolution 598 - July 19, 1988   U.S. Welcomes Move by Teheran and Hints Gulf Fleet Could Be Cut - July 19, 1988   Text of Iranian Letter to U.N. - July 19, 1988
