$32 Million in Grants

Judicial Inquiry Needed for Slush Gate

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) repeated its call today for a judicial inquiry into newly released evidence that raises questions about the direct political involvement of Premier McGuinty and other members of cabinet in awarding grants through 'Slush Gate', where $32 million in grants were issued in a year-end spending spree that cost Minister Colle his job.

CTF Ontario Director, Kevin Gaudet said, "A letter obtained by York University Professor David Noble through Freedom of Information brings to light new evidence which raises serious questions about political interference in the grants process." As reported in the Toronto Sun a letter from prominent Liberal fund-raiser Larry Tanenbaum thanks the Premier and Ministers Sorbara, Colle, Caplan, and Kwinter for their involvement in helping secure a $15 million grant for the 'Tomorrow Fund' to build a Jewish Community Centre. This grant amounted to 47% of all money issued. A special report by the auditor general (AG) slammed the decision process for awarding grants saying it was not "open, transparent, or accountable". The report also stated that the AG found no evidence of political influence. Professor Noble's letter is new evidence. Gaudet concluded, "The abuse of this fund is reminiscent of AdScam and raises questions requiring investigation by a body with subpoena powers, including, but not limited to: What role did ministers and/or cabinet play in directing grants to organizations with Liberal connections? Exactly, how did each grant recipients make Minister Colle's and Minister Sorbara's 'short-lists' for consideration? What role, if any, did the Liberal Party of Ontario play in the awarding of grants? After it received its grant, two board members of the Iranian Canadian Community Centre resigned; one to run as a Liberal candidate, the other to be the president of the Liberal riding association for the candidate. Was grant money provided directly or indirectly to either individual?
