Apparently since they were victims of segregation, they shouldn't have done anything to help themselves

Left, media jump all over Betsy DeVos because she praised black people for starting their own colleges

I want to say I don't understand the left, but that's not true. I understand them perfectly well. And here's the most important thing you need to know about them: There is really no core belief they embrace apart from the crucial importance of destroying their political opponents. So when they say something that seems completely inconsistent with something else they said, you simply have to search for the commonality between the two things. You're probably not going to find it in the substance. Rather, you're going to find it in the motivation.
Nowhere is this more true than on the subject of race, where the left has decided that anything a conservative says about black people is racist, no matter what it is. Call them dumb, you're a racist for calling them dumb. Call them smart and triumphant, you're a racist because you should be emphasizing their victimhood at the hands of evil white racists . . . like Donald Trump! Oh, and Betsy DeVos too. They've really outdone themselves with this one. DeVos was speaking yesterday before representatives from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (I guess that whole thing is a proper noun for some reason), and she praised them for being pioneers of school choice. Why? Because white colleges wouldn't let them in, so instead of acting defeated and allowing their children not to be educated, they started their own colleges. Here is the statement in full:

Left, media jump all over Betsy DeVos because she praised black people for starting their own colleges That's good, right? Excellent and praiseworthy, right? Not a chance, sillies. This is Betsy DeVos, so if she says something about black people, you must find a way to make it racist. But how can you possibly make this racist? It's complimentary and respectful in every way. Take it away, Slate:
Donald Trump met Monday at the White House with the leaders of a number of historically black colleges and universities. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos commemorated the meeting with one of the more bonkers statements you will ever see a 21st century politician make, somehow twisting an attempt to bring up her pet issue of school choice into praise for the segregated higher education system of the Jim Crow South. First of all, it sounds like a seventh-grader wrote this, which is perhaps what happens when you put someone who has never really had a real job in charge of the Department of Education. Second, this official 2017 federal government press release celebrates legal segregation (!!!) on the grounds that the Jim Crow education system gave black students "more options," as if there was a robust competition between HBCUs and white universities for their patronage. (When black Mississippian James Meredith chose the "option" of enrolling at the University of Mississippi in 1962, a massive white mob formed on the campus; two people were shot to death and hundreds injured in the ensuing battle/riot, during which federal marshals came under heavy gunfire, requiring the ultimate intervention of 20,000 U.S. soldiers and thousands more National Guardsmen.)

I don't know if this guy is simply dishonest or if he's incapable of understanding a basic statement. Maybe his problem is that he's so steeped in the all-Republicans-are-racists narrative that he can't look at a compliment and not imagine there's an insult in there somewhere. DeVos doesn't praise segregation for crying out loud. She praises the way these people reacted to it. They were denied opportunities, and instead of whining and giving up, they created their own. That's what strong, admirable people do. But the left and their media mouthpieces are all over social media today, slamming DeVos (and Trump by association) for this terribly racist statement in which Betsy DeVos praises black people for a strong and triumphant response to racism. What you can take from this is that the left and the media cannot be taken seriously, at all, ever, when they scream that a conservative is racist. If you're willing to call this racist, you're willing to call anything racist. And that makes you a total joke.
