Liberals rooting for the Taliban

It appears the Taliban Wing of the Liberal Party of Canada has taken control of the party and is issuing policy statements demanding that Canadian troops get out of Afghanistan.

Or so one would think when listening to Stephane Dion talk about what the role of Canada’s military should be there. Dion wants Canadian soldiers to abandon the gains they have made against the Taliban in Afghanistan and assume the role of nation builders by providing assistance in redevelopment and training. Maybe Mr. Dion doesn’t read the papers, but the Canadian Forces had already taken this tack last year when they turned responsibility for the security in Panjwaii Province over to the Afghan national police and army. Canadian troops acted as advisors and trainers and supervised the Afghani soldiers in their attempt to defend the province. Needless to say, the plan was an abject disaster as the Taliban quickly took back all the ground previously gained by the blood of Canadian soldiers. The Afghan army and police were not defeated because they did not wish to defend their country, they were defeated because the had not had enough time to be properly trained, nor had the soldiers been adequately paid, which admittedly is one bug that will have to be worked out if Afghanistan is to remain a democracy. Suffice it to say that the Afghan government had not been given sufficient time to field a seasoned and well-trained army. The old saying about the definition of insanity being the state of repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting different results is something that maybe some of Mr. Dion’s friends might want to point out to him. At the same time one of those friends might take him aside and mention the fact that the lives of Canadian soldiers are not bargaining chips in the never-ending quest to attain power. If Mr. Dion is really as ignorant of consequences as he appears to be with his calls for a total withdrawal of Canadian forces from any combat role in Afghanistan by 2009, then he is to be pitied and dispatched from the leadership role of the party forthwith. However, if his ignorance is feigned and he is playing politics with the security of Canadian troops, then he is to be reviled as a callous opportunist who has no regard for the safety and welfare of Canadians. In case Mr. Dion has forgotten, the Taliban encouraged and abetted al Qaeda in the planning and execution of the 9/11 attacks on the US. The Taliban has also reduced Afghan women to the level of beasts of burden by forbidding them the right to be educated or to hold a job, or to go out of their homes unaccompanied by a male relative. Under the Taliban if a woman was raped, she was the one punished, usually through an “honor killing”. The Taliban routinely executed homosexuals, sometimes by stoning them to death during halftime at soccer games. The Taliban also forced Hindus to wear a yellow strip of cloth, much in the same manner as the Nazis forced Jews to wear a yellow Star of David. The list goes on an on. Under the UN Charter, nations have a “responsibility to protect” innocent civilians from oppression and violence. The forces currently fighting in Afghanistan are there under the auspices of NATO, which in turn is there under the auspices of the UN. Abandoning Afghanistan to the reversion of the pre-medieval governance of an organization such as the Taliban would be a true crime against humanity, which is something Mr. Dion should consider before attempting to make political hay from the suffering of others.
