Political media are always obsessed with the so-called inside baseball of what goes on behind the scenes in campaigns. And while they often have no idea what's really going on, or why, that won't stop them from engaging in baseless speculation and trying to convince you they know things they really don't.
So they're all trying to tell us today that Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski was "fired," and that there is turmoil within the Trump campaign, and that Lewandowski must have lost a "power struggle" with Paul Manafort.
Let me tell you what I know from the experience of having run for president. First, there could be a lot of reasons it seemed right to make a change, and it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with bad blood or power struggles. A campaign goes through different phases. That includes the start-up phase, the initial momentum phase and - if you win the nomination - whole new phase with entirely different characteristics going into the general election.
It's entirely possible that he told Trump that he realized it was time for him to move on, because the needs of a general election campaign required a different set of skills.
I saw Corey at the rally in Atlanta last Wednesday when I introduced Donald Trump. When I asked him how he was doing, he said in a very exasperated tone, "I'm spent!" I know what it's like. He'd been drinking from a fire hydrant. That's the nature of a presidential campaign. I gathered from this comment that Corey might be burned out.
People in the political media will always try to make it sound like a staff change means intrigue and drama. But often it doesn't mean that. I've parted ways with many people, and while it's sometimes a tough decision and sometimes a bit of a shock to the person involved, the rationale for parting ways is often clear - and mature, professional people can often handle it without bad blood or hard feelings.
At one point during Ben Carson's campaign, he let his campaign manager go. He later helped that same campaign manager get another job. Because it wasn't personal! It's just what you need to do sometimes.
I think the political media has the sound in its head of Donald Trump declaring on The Apprentice, "You're fired!" They're always accusing him of thinking this is a reality show, but maybe they're the ones who are treating it like that, and he's the one who's simply trying to make reasonable moves so he can win.
By the way, all this behind-the-scenes intrigue is much more interesting to the media than it is to the voters. They want to know who would share their values and priorities in the White House - not who's in, who's out, who's up, who's down. And if this change needed to be made for the good of the campaign - regardless of who precipitated it - then no one is going to withhold their vote from Donald Trump in November because of a staff change that occurred in June.
