#NeverTrumper claim that looks pretty silly now: No reason to believe Trump would be better than Hillary

You'll remember them saying it. They said it a lot. A reluctant Trump voter would acknowledge that Trump may not be a perfect candidate or a perfect conservative, but clearly he would be a much better president than Hillary - so the best thing to do for the sake of the country would clearly be to vote for him. The #NeverTrumpers would thunder back: There is no reason to think Trump would be better than Hillary.
Oh? I mean, that's a pretty low bar to clear. Better than Hillary is like better than Brussel sprouts. Pretty much all you have to do is exist. It's like getting the $100 question right on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Trump couldn't even do that? Not to these people. Trump was a fraud. Trump was a con man. Trump was a liberal Democrat in disguise. He was probably a Clinton plant! This was an awfully implausible argument, but they stuck to it stubbornly because it was the only way to knock down the best argument reluctant conservatives had for backing Trump. If they could somehow make the case that there really was no difference between Trump and Hillary, they hoped they could justify a position that appeared to be helping put Hillary in the White House. Well. Obviously the best news is that the six or seven high-profile #NeverTrump conservatives were mainly just talking amongst themselves and influencing no one, which is why Trump won without their help. But the worst news for them is that Trump has already made them look like complete clowns.

How can that be, you ask? Trump isn't even president yet! How can he have proven anyone wrong? He hasn't proven many people wrong, yet, because you're right. He hasn't spent a single second governing. But as to the #NeverTrump argument that he would not even be any better than Hillary would have been - that has already been shredded. Jeff Sessions for attorney general? What corrupt Eric Holder clone does Hillary pick? Betsy DeVos for education secretary? What teachers' union stooge does Hillary select? Tom Price for HHS secretary? What ObamaCare defender does Hillary put in that job? You can go on and on. Trump said all along that good leaders show what they're made of by the kinds of people they pick. Trump's cabinet selections alone, to the extent they show his priorities, demonstrate beyond all doubt that his priorities and his vision for this country are about as different from Hillary's as priorities can be. Now I'm sure the #NeverTrumpers will respond by raising all sorts of objections to other things Trump has done. What about $1 trillion in infrastructure spending? What's conservative about that? What about the flag burning thing? Huh? Huh?

#Nevertrumpers, it appears we saved the Supreme Court without your help

Hang on a second. No one is arguing Trump is perfect. The question on the table is whether there is any reason to think Trump would be better than Hillary. Even if he never does another conservative thing the entire time he's president, these cabinet picks alone make him better than Hillary. And if you #NeverTrumpers didn't want to give Trump defenders such an easy line of defending him, then you shouldn't have made such an absurd argument. I'm getting more confident by the day that the ObamaCare repeal is not only imminent but, with Price at HHS, it's going to be handled very well and we're going to replace it with something very good. And Trump's cabinet appointments are making me much more confident about what he might do with his Supreme Court pick. Oh right. The Supreme Court. That thing many of us said was reason enough alone to support Trump because otherwise we would find ourselves dealing with a liberal court majority for at least a generation. And you #NeverTrumpers said, oh no, you can't "compromise your principles" (whatever that means) to support Trump just because of the Supreme Court! Yeah, about that: You're welcome. It appears we saved the Supreme Court without your help.
