Non-PC Types (Don't You Love them?) Can Also Be Hypocrites

In a recent article carried in Canada Free Press, I labeled my essay "PC= BS". According to comments, readers agreed that political correctness, particularly as practiced by pols, has exceeded its shelf life and should be relegated to the rusty dumpster out back. The controversy surrounding Ted Cruz' speech at the Republican National Convention prods me to revisit PC and pair it with the adage "there are always two sides (at least) to every story". Without a dog in the fight . . . I can't vote because I'm a Canadian citizen with legal permanent residency status in the US (legal meaning I didn't swim across a body of water to get freebies, including a sneaky vote) . . . I can be objective with this piece, even though I pay my taxes in the US.
When the race for the Republican nomination began with more than a dozen hopefuls vying for the right to represent the party, like many interested conservatives I took plenty of time to winnow down my preferred list. Cruz was among the remaining candidates I thought had the right message and a good chance to win the big prize. (The fact he was born in Canada to a Cuban father and American mother had no bearing on my deliberations . . . his family looked just fine to me.) The road to winning the nomination was as bumpy and lumpy as anything I've ever seen. The winner turned out to be the least politically correct slugger in the fray. His supporters loved him for it, perhaps above all other attributes he may have. He spared no opponent from the thrashings he gladly delivered. It was bloody . . . maybe even bloody awful! But I was OK with the result because I desperately want the changes Trump promises to deliver . . . and he may be better than Amazon making good on delivery. Turning back to Cruz, he too is a non-PC guy. And like Trump, the Republican Party establishment hates him. If the insiders hate you, you must be OK to the rest of us! Presumably the non-PC characteristic kept him in the nomination race after all others were eliminated. The two finalists were public faves because they were non-PC.

But when Cruz exercised the trait supporters liked, they turned on him. Suddenly they wanted him to be PC!. They wanted him to say nice things about the man who castigated him and his family and tried to ruin both. The hypocrites turn out to be the same people who cheered the loudest for their non-PC guy! I'm not buying it! It seems to me both parties made a mistake. Trump should have insisted on an endorsement before he permitted Cruz to speak . . . and Cruz, knowing he could not in good conscience endorse the man who attacked him and his family, should have declined the invitation to speak. No controversy would have ensued. Ironically, as it turns out, the combination of errors above took the juvenile, insulting action of Ohio governor John Kasich off the front page, and perhaps off the political hook. He refused to attend the Convention held in his own state and didn't even greet the attendees. I don't know if he is or isn't PC . . . but he sure is a real jerk!
