Open Up Cuba’s Access to the Internet NOW, Joe Biden!Cubans in Florida, many of whom made it there through shark-infested waters in flimsy homemade conveyances, are being had by the Democrats. Dragging their heels on not reconnecting the oppressed people of Cuba to the Internet is Democrat Hypocrisy 101. Joe Biden’s Democrats are pretending they don’t know how to restore online access to the good people of Cuba. They definitely do know because it was the Democrats who provided online access to everyday Cubans in the first place back in 1991!

“Uncle Sam officially broke off relations with Havana under the 1961 Trading with the Enemy Act. Not so for Teresa Heinz-Kerry, who in 1991, using a Canadian connection funded by her Tides Foundation, linked the communist country up to the World Internet. “The Toronto-based Web/Nirv, Canadian affiliate of the Institute for Global Communications (IGC) and its offshoot the association for Progressive Communications (APC), used a 64 KBPS undersea cable IP link from Havana to Sprint in the United States, linking Cubans to the Information Highway. f “IGC and APC are one of the Tides Foundation's largest ongoing projects. "A massive, 24-hour, transnational computer communications network, IGC services 17 United Nations offices, 40,000 activists, some of the radical stripe and a legion of non-government organizations in more than 133 countries. “The Tides' octopus of the electronic communications world got its start back in 1987, when the England-based GreenNet began collaborating with IGC, which operates PeaceNet, EcoNet, ConflictNet and LaborNet in the U.S.

“According to an APC Internet historical account, the two giant networks began sharing their electronic conference materials and "demonstrated that transnational electronic communications could serve international, as well as domestic committees working for peace, human rights and the environment.” “By late 1989, the IGC network included Canada (Web), Sweden (NordNet), Brazil (AlterNex), Nicaragua (Nicaro) and Australia (Pegasus). “Hooking up the left wing world to the Internet didn't happen by default. In the spring of 1990, The Tides Foundation funded APC with the specific goal "to coordinate the operation and developing of an emerging global network”. “Cuba's 1991 connection to the Internet was initiated by APC affiliate Canadian NGO Web Networks, forerunner to Web/Nirv. "We created an information tunnel through the American blockade," explained Mark Surman, former technical director of Web Networks. "Our computers would make a long distance call to the computers of the Cuban Center of automated Exchange (CENIaI), about three times a day to pick up and deliver mail. This is called a store-and-forward system. Then this traffic was gatewayed to the rest of the Internet.” “When Cubans replaced Canadians as the islands' access provider, Fidel Castro's government became the gatekeeper for access and content. “For the past 40 years, the Torricelli Law has restricted Cuba from purchasing goods from subsidiaries of U.S. companies. “The Tides Foundation is a charity.

“Under American regulations currently applying to tax-exempt, not-for-profit organizations, IGC "has had to openly pronounce that its networks are for educational and charitable purposes only." “Under usage rules in the ICG manual, it states "the network shall not be used in any substantial way to carry on propaganda, to influence legislation or to intervene in any political campaign. "It may be used, however, to discuss in a non-partisan way, legislation, politicians and campaigns. Only up to five percent of the total resource time of staff may go to working on political causes and towards lobbying efforts.” (Italics, CFP’s) “Canada, upon which Cuba's tax system is based, maintains a much softer stance on the Castro regime. Not only was Cuba's tax system built with the direct advice of Revenue Canada, Canada has been doing business with the island since 1959. Canadians, with an estimated 500,000 visits this year, make up the largest single tourist group to Cuba.”

‘FCC Commissioner Lauds DeSantis For Pushing Biden To Give Internet To Cuba: ‘Can Get To Work Immediately’-(Daily Wire, July 14, 2021)
“FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr praised Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in a statement on Wednesday after the governor pressed President Joe Biden to step up and act in response to the crackdown in Cuba by providing the Cuban people internet access after the island’s communist dictatorship cutoff access as it cracked down on demonstrators that participated in pro-freedom protests over the weekend. “Governor DeSantis’ call for the Biden Administration to provide the necessary support for American businesses to deliver Internet service to the Cuban people is exactly right,” Carr said in a statement. “While Cuba’s communist regime is blocking Internet access in an effort to hide their brutal crackdown on freedom, American enterprises have the technical capability to beam connectivity to the Cuban people and help power their real and ongoing struggle for life and liberty. With the backing and authorization of the federal government, these private sector innovators can get to work immediately.” “Carr said that the U.S. must immediately “expand our efforts” to help the Cuban people, even as the Biden administration has signaled the opposite, sparking backlash. “Internet shutdowns are increasingly becoming a tool of tyranny for authoritarian regimes across the globe. America must stand against this anti-democratic tactic and move with haste to provide Internet freedom to the Cuban people,” Carr added. “Opposition from Havana- a regime that actively works to block Radio Television Marti’s signals- is expected. We must not be deterred. We should do everything in our power to ensure that the Cuban people have the power of connectivity and the ability to share their fight for freedom with the world.”

“Carr’s statement comes after DeSantis pressed Biden earlier in the evening to step up to the plate “immediately” and help the Cuban people by providing internet access so that the world can see what is going on. “I write to urge you to assist in providing Internet access to the people of Cuba standing up against communist oppression and demanding a voice after decades of suffering under the yoke of a cruel dictatorship,” DeSantis wrote in his letter to Biden. “As you know, the Cuban people are taking to the streets to protest the Communist regime, and the Cuban government has responded with violence. “At first, the world could see the images and videos of this mass movement, but now the tyrannical regime of President Miguel Díaz-Canel has shut off access to the Internet. The Cuban people have lost their ability to communicate with one another, and many Floridians born in Cuba have no information on the safety of their loved ones. Equally as important, the world has also lost the ability to see what is happening on the ground as the Cuban people rise in support of freedom.”
Cuban-born Floridians, tell the Joe Biden Democrats to open up, Cuba’s access to the Internet immediately. Tell them to do it now, and don’t wait another day. If Mrs John Kerry could hook the island up to the ‘Net to spite President George H. W. Bush during the Trading with the Enemy Act Embargo in 1991, hypocritical Democrats can do it now to free millions of Cubans from their Communist oppressors. Turn the spotlight on the brutal Communist regime in Cuba, giving the entire world a front row seat to what they are doing to their own people!
