The Porniverse and Elliot Rodger

Porn and Murder Sprees: Porn and Celebrity Triggers?

Once again a narcissistic loner has gone on a murder spree, and once again the usual hucksters are peddling their usual remedies in the aftermath of a tragedy.
In California, one Elliot Rodger carefully plotted his ‘Day of Retribution’ and on May 23rd, he went on a spree with a knife, hammer, a gun, and his BMW near Santa Barbara California. He killed six people and injured 13 more, before taking his own life after being wounded by a police officer. Typically, press reports made much of the fact that the killer had three handguns and 410 rounds of ammunition – not so much that he had apparently only fired ten bullets during his rampage. The inevitable calls for ‘gun control’ are flying thick and fast from the usual suspects, never mind the lethality of his knife and his automobile. However, perhaps we don’t need to know about the guns Rodger had. What might be more interesting would be the extent of his porn collection and his preferences for ‘infotainment’. The killer left a long rambling ‘manifesto’ complaining about the fact that he was a 22 year old virgin and that the world had not recognized his true worth. This suggests that perhaps there are some other enabling factors to be considered. Shakespeare famously observed in his play As you Like It that “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players:” Almost every single human being alive today considers themselves to be in the star role in the drama of their own lives.

Few of us believe ourselves to be adequately recognized or rewarded according to our merits; but most of can recognize the worth of the other players close to us on the boards. Elliot Rodger was probably enough of a sociopath to fail to recognize that his complaint is a common theme in the human condition. There are lots of sociopaths out there and most lead fairly normal lives. Many probably watch porn and pay some attention to news stories about celebrities. These days it is hard to avoid learning more about the lives of the wealthy and beautiful than one might care to, but perhaps Rodgers – by dint of his Hollywood parents – was closer to this world than most. ‘Infotainment’ – stories about celebrities in the news media – is relentless these days. Probably because it is easy to carry stories about the likes of Beiber or Kardashian then it is to maintain a first rate news-team in Kharkiv or Bangkok. At any rate, many of us are asked to be permanent spectators to a party of the rich and beautiful; a party in which our invitations seem to be permanently missing. Most of us manage to cope with this regrettable oversight easily enough. It might be safe to assume that hard core porn was also a big part of Rodger’s enabling package. It seemed that he tried -- as feebly as he did most things in his miserable life -- to get into some campus sorority houses to punish the women therein. The world of hard-core porn has its own realities: In the “porniverse” sand never gets caught in awkward places on a beach, gay men can take off tight jeans without removing their boots, and every backyard swimming pool has some 18-year-old girl who is “sooo bored” that there is only one solution. Not only is foreplay unnecessary, but so are dating, courting and wooing…everybody is ready for sex all the time. It is not uncommon to find people who think the porniverse is real. The terrorists of al-Qaeda and many Salafist Imams appear to be great consumers of pornography; this suggests that part of their hatred for the Western World is based on an erroneous jealousy. Numerous serial killers were enabled to become homicidal through pornography. The literature about mass-shooting killers such as Seung-Hoi Cho (Virginia Polytechnic), Marc Lepine (Ecole Polytechnique), or Tim Kretschmer (Baden-Wurttemberg) suggests heavy porn use as well. Cho and Lepine also couldn’t connect with girls either, but evidently believed they were being excluded from a world of all-sex, all the time. In the porniverse, no women are so wanton and available as undergraduate students, particularly if they belong to a Sorority. In the twisted mind of Rodgers, they had to be punished for not making themselves available to him. Other men who obviously knew how to get invited inside also had to be punished for having humour, self-confidence, a modicum of charm, and other traits Rodger lacked. So instead of the usual post-tragedy maundering about gun-control let’s talk about another problem instead. John Thompson--Among many other things, he spent five years on the Ontario Film Review Board and had to screen 3,000 hard-core adult films for violations of Canadian laws and regulations.
