Prince Harry Visits Ulva Island, New Zealand

NewZealand travelAfter arriving in New Zealand on May 9, His Royal Highness Prince Harry is visiting the country until May 16. Prince Harry’s visit went off-the-beaten track and away from the crowds on Sunday, when he travelled south to Stewart Island. This was no ordinary royal day out. New Zealand's third and southernmost island community has a population of approximately 400 residents and most of them, along with a few extras, turned out to welcome the Prince to their piece of island paradise.

Stewart Island is a remarkable hideaway that embraces the serenity of nature, # with the promise of adventure. Beauty cloaks this destination. A 20-minute flight or one-hour ferry trip across Foveaux Strait gives way to a world of towering, emerald-green rainforest, softening to white sandy shores, summer sunsets and winter auroras so spectacular, they gave rise to the island’s Maori moniker Rakiura – Land of the Glowing Skies. Here, only the chorus of birdsong punctuates the peace. At midday, Prince Harry took a water taxi across peaceful Patterson Inlet to nearby Ulva Island, a pest-free “open sanctuary” where visitors can see and learn about species that wouldn’t survive on the mainland. On Ulva, the Stewart Island robin, the South Island saddleback and the yellowhead are some of the rare birds to be seen. And then, of course, is the weka – a gregarious, flightless bird, that will bound right up to greet you personally. There are three main walking tracks on the island between Post Office Cove, Sydney Cove, Boulder Beach and West End Beach. Ulva Island’s forest has a soft, mossy floor and many young rimu, miro and totara tree seedlings sprout from the forest floor. As the island has never been milled, the forest is filled with ancient native trees that have been standing for hundreds of years.
