It was my first visit to Nova Scotia and it was an adventure. The trip started with a stay overnight in Peggy’s Cove and ended in Halifax. In between were assignments of taking pictures of where old friends grew up. One of those places was Digby, N.S which is famous for its scallops.
One of the best places we stayed at was Graham’s Bayside Cottages. (Aka Graham’s Pioneer Retreat). They are located in “Digby Neck” 25kms west of Digby.
When you look up the word ‘serenity” in the dictionary, it means calmness. It also means “the state or quality of being serene”. Serenity is the perfect name of the cottage we rented. It was one of three cottages available to rent at this romantic, peaceful secluded resort.
Each cottage is hidden from the others and very private. Waking up to watch the sunrise with a coffee in hand was spectacular. We had a panoramic view of Digby Neck, Saint Mary’s Bay and Mainland Nova Scotia. If you love wildlife such as deer, chipmunks and rabbits this is a great place to stay. I do recommend taking hiking boots for exploring and beachcombing. It is an excellent beach for rock collectors.
Keep your eye on the water as seals, porpoises and other marine life like to fish near the shoreline.
Each cottage is fully equipped with everything you’ll need. They even had aluminum foil for the stainless steel BBQ on the deck that we used to cook our fresh scallops. This was a great place to unwind and wish I could have stayed longer. The cottages are fairly new, very clean and pets are allowed. Adding to the charm, each cottage has a family of pet rabbits living outside.
For the environment you’ll love the fact three containers are offered for garbage, recycled goods and compost. Pride reflects throughout the workmanship of each cottage on this very large tract of land.
At night there is a shared beach bonfire area for all to socialize, under the star filled sky. All this with the sound of waves washing on the shore is a perfect way to end a day.
The Digby Neck itself is a wonderful area to explore. There are three different areas you can drive to whale watch for approximately $55.00 per person; you are guaranteed to see whales at certain times of the year. For an Ontarian such as myself this was a must do! Apparently, whales love to fish in Digby due to the high tides they get. Their prey is plentiful and the whales swim through twice a year in between seasons. I could go on forever about the place.
