Dilemmas Faced by the Border States

Should Arizona Consider Sovereignty in Regards to Illegal Immigration?

Our administration, both Democrat and some Republicans, but mainly the far-left and "progressives" do have a problem with the word "illegal" in regards to the subject of immigration. Although the states along the border are feeling its effects far greater than the rest of the country, we all know the cost of this exodus to the American taxpayer is staggering, and literally, criminal as well.

Late Tuesday night another Border Patrol Officer was killed in the line of duty in a remote area about ten miles north of the border. The shooting took place around 11:00 p.m. Officer Brian Terry, 40, was shot and killed in a gun battle with "bandits" who prey on illegal immigrants and smugglers, or the shooting could have been committed by smugglers themselves. My heart goes out to the Terry family, and I'd like to thank them for the great service Border Patrol Officer Terry provided to our country. Four suspects are in custody and a fifth is still being sought at the time of this writing. Agent Terry served in the Tucson sector, which as of May 30, 2010, over 168,000 illegals had been captured in the previous eight months in this one sector alone. The Tucson Sector is a 262 mile stretch along the Mexico-Arizona border. This sector makes up over half of the illegal immigrant arrests and marijuana seizures made along the southwest border. It encompasses 90,000 square miles of sharp rises, and steep ravines. This alone is proof that the illegals are attempting to cross in harsher and harsher terrain in order to avoid detection.

The Title

The title of the article asks the question, should Arizona consider sovereignty in regards to illegal immigration? For the liberal mind set, let me quickly say, it is what it is. I'm not suggesting secession, by any means. I'm not saying I don't advocate immigration, because I do, wholeheartedly! This with one stipulation though...legally. This is our law, and it is not to let them come here illegally, and in turn "game" our system. Not all, but many do, and the left then wants to grant them amnesty. I am suggesting though, and quite seriously as a matter of fact, that possibly Arizona should consider such an option simply to protect its citizens, protect its economy, curtail the influx of illegal drugs along with gang activity, and also probably save lives to boot. The lives I'm speaking of at this moment are not American lives, but actually, the lives of illegal immigrants themselves. The reasoning behind this is simple. The point to this being that the illegals are indeed trying to cross much rougher and secluded territory to avoid detection, and this means the opportunity for misfortune is much greater. The "smugglers" bringing them into our country are after one thing...their money. Many times they tell the illegal they've only a few hours walk to "catch" a car, van, etc., when in reality, the trek may last several days. Little food or water means certain hardship, but sadly, in many cases it means death. In the 2010 fiscal year, ending on Sept. 30, there were 252 bodies discovered in the Tucson Sector alone, up from the previous high of 237 found in 2007. So you see for most, their problems begin in Mexico at some geographic point. Their problems then continue on through Mexico via theft, rape, etc. They reach the border, where they're then brought across by the smugglers, and as stated earlier, they're lied to about the distance to travel, and many perish, because of...the Mexican smugglers misrepresentation of the distance involved. Finally, after these trials and tribulations, if they're lucky enough to have survived the desert, they still stand a good chance of being robbed, sexually assaulted, or even killed by bandits...Mexican bandits! Wouldn't you think that by Arizona declaring sovereignty to protect the people of Arizona, regardless of what the federal government says, would not only help her citizens, but also save illegal immigrant lives as well? As far as the legalities concerned in this type of action, I have no earthly idea, and don't profess to. But I do know that sometimes you have to do what you have to do, simply as a means of survival. In terms of humanity, I see 252 bodies that were found in the Tucson Sector this year that in actuality would not have been discovered had we enforced and practiced tighter border security. Simply, if you can't come illegally, then you must come via legal means...the right way.

The "Real" Agenda

Sadly, though our government continues to turn a blind eye in regards to this dilemma. Even sadder is the fact that in most cases it has nothing to at all to do with "humanity," but has everything to do with potential votes. This is one other crime involved when speaking of this subject. Look no further than the entitlement programs for the poor, which is in itself is an excellent example of creating a voter bloc. Were these programs created to help these people? Of course they weren't! I've said it before, and I'll continue to state it loudly and clearly, "It was done with the intention for greater political power, longevity of political power through, "created dependency" of a select group of people, targeted as a vote for life into the progressive ideals." There is no compassion for these constituents by their elected officials, only the quest for more political power...with this designating more greed, more corruption, and more blatant dishonesty towards the American people as a whole, by the far-left and elected officials...across both party lines...the "me" syndrome. Many, many Hispanics today are setting themselves up to be indoctrinated into the very same "dependency trap" that has literally enslaved a large part of the inner-city African American people. Another example of our officials looking after their own best interests in the illegal immigration "scam," is who in fact we are allowing to enter our country illegally. Has it been throngs of independently well off, or professional people who might be open to the idea of coming to America on account of possible political oppression from within their own country? Nope. These types of people could immediately have a good economic impact on our country through their paying of taxes, creating and not filling job openings, and their ability to purchase products once they get here. Now that sounds like a win, win situation for us all, does it not? Of course it does, but for one little drawback. These people don't need or expect our government to provide for them, they only want the opportunity for success our country provides through their work ethics and the desire to better themselves and their family. With that being the case, what benefit are they to our progressive politician, or the far-left in its goal of destroying capitalism? Absolutely none, and with that being the case, these types of immigrants can come, but they have to do it legally, which may take years. On the other hand, they need to let as many illegal immigrants as possible enter the country, with 99% of them being poor, BUT most importantly, this is the voter base they desire, they have to have in order to continue their political objectives. With the true believers in our Constitution now awakened to the dark side of American political agendas, and showing last month in the voter booths across our country that we will not continue to allow such blatant disregard to "we the people," the continued illegal immigration is absolutely necessary to their political survival. It means votes...for the rest of their political career, paid for by the taxpayer through entitlements. This is why they're pushing the passage of the Dream Act. Again, not in regards to the illegal having his or her dream fulfilled by becoming an American citizen, no way. But actually keeping "the dream" of the far-left alive in their quest for a Socialist, government controlled society...power! So in essence, the illegal immigration being allowed to take place has not one thing to do with "humanity," but everything to do with forced political ideology. So am I wrong in asking if Arizona should indeed consider sovereignty once more in regards to this?

Mexico at a Glance

First, take a quick look at Mexico proper. In 2010, 12 mayors have been killed, along with a candidate for governor. The media and press are all under attack as well. As a reporter, if you speak out against the corruption of elected officials or the drug cartels, your life expectancy is very short indeed. Media offices have been bombed, and the cartels have infiltrated some of the news organizations. A fact that literally is staggering to me is this; since President Vicente Calderon took office in 2006, vowing to crush the cartels, over 33,000 people have been killed. Isn't that mind-boggling...just south of our border. http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6BF0P620101216 The cartels corrupt or intimidate law-enforcement officials, even to the point that some members of the Federal Investigations Agency (AFI) are believed to be actually working as "enforcers" for the cartels. In 2005 it was reported, that of the 7,000 agents working for the AFI, nearly 1,500 were being investigated for suspected criminal activity and 457 were in fact facing charges. Mexican cartels control about 70% of all narcotics that are brought into the U.S., and almost 90% of the cocaine begins its journey into the U.S. from here as well. The U.S. State Department estimates the money generated from these drug sales to be anywhere from $13.6 to $48.4 billion yearly.

Dilemmas Faced by the Border States

This next section is dedicated to clearly showing the dilemmas faced today by our states located along the border of Mexico. This is taken from a House Committee Report on Homeland Security. It is titled, "A Line in the Sand: Confronting the Threat at the Southwest Border" Keep in mind the U.S.-Mexico border runs nearly 2,000 miles.
 • During 2005, the Border Patrol captured approx. 1.2 million illegal aliens. All but 165,000 of these were Mexican. Of the non-Mexican aliens, around 650 were from special interest countries. Special interest countries being those designated by our intelligence community as countries that could export individuals that could do harm to our country by the way of terrorism.
 • U.S. Immigration and Enforcement Investigations revealed that aliens were smuggled from the Middle East to staging areas in Central and South America, before being smuggled illegally into the U.S.
 • Members of Hezbollah have already entered the U.S. across the Southwest border.
 • U.S. military and intelligence officials believe Venezuela is emerging as a potential hub of terrorism into the Western Hemisphere. The Venezuelan government is issuing identity documents that could subsequently be used to obtain a U.S. visa and enter the country.
This should be priority #1 for border security and THE reason for shutting off the flow of illegal aliens into our country. Each day that goes by, continues to raise the risk factor in this matter. We're playing with fire.
 • Federal law enforcement estimates that 10 to 30 percent of illegal aliens are actually caught, meaning as many as 4 to 10 million illegal aliens crossed into the U.S. in 2005 alone!
 • On Feb. 7, 2006, the Subcommittee convened to examine a particularly troubling into the sovereign territory of the United States by armed individuals who were driving military-style vehicles, carrying military type weapons, and appeared to be wearing Mexican Army uniforms.
 • The cartels have cemented ties to street and prison gangs here in the U.S.
 • One MS-13 gang member described the ease at which he comes and goes across the border. He decided one year he wanted to go back to Guatemala to see his mother during the Christmas holidays. To save his own money, he turned himself over to authorities here in the U.S. and was flown home to Guatemala under the expedited removal program on the taxpayer's dime, spent the holidays at home with his family, then crossed the border illegally once again. He claims he has done this several times.
 • The cartels have no mercy for women or children.
 • The Violent Crimes Institute conducted a 12 month in-depth study of illegal immigrants who committed sex crimes and murders in the time period of Jan. 1999 through April of 2006. This study clearly shows the U.S. faces a dangerous threat from sexual predators crossing the border illegally.
They looked at 1,500 cases in-depth, including serial rapes, serial murders, sexual homicides, and child molestation...all by illegal immigrants. Police reports, public records, interviews with police and media accounts were all included. Offenders were located in 36 states, with most of the offenders located in States with the highest numbers of illegal immigrants. California ranked first followed by Texas, Arizona, New Jersey, New York, and Florida. Based on an estimated illegal immigrant population of 12,000,000, and with ICE reports and public records showing sex offenders comprising 2% of the illegals apprehended, the Violent Crimes Institute estimates that there are approximately 240,000 illegal immigrant sex offenders in the U.S. Using these numbers, the Institute concluded that there are 93 sex offenders and 12 serial sexual offenders coming across the U.S. borders every day. The 1,500 offenders used in this study had a total of 5,999 victims. Each sex offender averaged 4 victims. This puts the estimated victimization numbers by illegal immigrants at around 960,000 for the 88 months examined in this study! Those numbers are appalling, aren't they? To have that extent of those types of crimes committed in our country is unforgivable, but to have them committed in our country by illegal aliens is unconscionable. We know there have, and probably still are instances of military-styled vehicles, with military-styled weapons in these vehicles, and even the occupants of the vehicles wearing what resembles Mexican army uniforms on the U.S. side of the border. Not hearsay, but appearing in a House Committee on Homeland Security Report. We've seen the numbers given by the Violent Crimes Institute regarding sexually related crimes committed by illegal aliens...around 960,000 in the 88 month study?? We know members of Hamas and other terrorist organizations are crossing our borders from Mexico as well. They're even being "trained" in the art of how to dress, act, and speak phrases in Spanish to appear to be "Latino." On top of all this we have the "crushing" cost to the American taxpayer in regards to housing, education, anchor babies, health care, along with even prison incarceration from illegal immigration. Heck, we even fly them home through the expedited removal program on our dime, only to have them cross right back again when the urge strikes them. This is a complete fiasco here people! We all have to demand that this border be secured! The federal government obviously doesn't want to resolve this issue, and once again this brings us back to the "me" syndrome. It's not about what's best for the American people, as the examples above clearly show this to be true and it's not about the "humanity" issue as the far-left and progressives like to claim. Just recently Janet Napolitano declared the border as save as it's ever been, and in retrospect I believe now she has a point, as our southern border hasn't been secure in a long, long time, courtesy of Washington D.C. So as the title to the article asks, should Arizona or any other border state, for that matter, be allowed to declare sovereignty in regards to illegal immigration? I say yes, absolutely, as no one else wants to aid in any true respect of actually solving the problem. But oh, they immediately want to point their fingers and declare any actions taken by a state to combat this problem as...unconstitutional! Have you ever heard of such? Me either! God Bless!
